Mate, what about putting a standard crankset on your CX bike, or a 36 inner ring on its current compact (I assume it's a 50/34) and an 11/23 cassette?

Best of luck in your search, but by the sound of things you have what you need already.

I know, I know, N+1 and all that......

I'm coming to the conclusion that you are correct. I already have a reasonable winter bike, and I've just been using the big ring on the road all the time.

So I think I'm goinga fit fitted mudguards to it for now and crack on. As a temporary measure I'm going fit p clips to the front forks, but ideally I'd like to find some of the Boardman cross forks with eyelets. I believe they do exist, but where?

I got SKS Longboards to work on my Quantec CX bike, they attach to the quick release skewer & don't need eyelets or P-clips.
I was using a 700c28 tyre and clearance was pretty tight.
