I find I need the motivation of a planned event hanging over my head to get on with serious training.
Currently it's still a bit too unsure to get my butt into gear.
As johno_78 says, get it booked, then you've got to do it.

Realistically it's only a few 16 mile rides with rests between.

Yes, the ring is far from flat, but unless you're trying for a pb, it's not going to be too bad.

Book it, book it, book it.....

To be fair, Seek has been wanting to book since before Christmas. We've been holding off for another couple of bods to make a 4-man team up.

Chaps I am in , the only proviso being I am likely to move house in the the next six months and I bet it will fall on the same weekend (hopefully not)!

Do I need to purchase the ticket to it now?

SixPotBelly will be in touch with you soon hopefully. I've just sent him a message to let him know you're in. He will let you know how to sort out paying him so that he can battle through the dodgy German website to get another team signed up.

It's only a house move, that can be put off by a couple of days wink

Here I am smile

With you on board we now have three of the four required for team 3. Seek has said he'd do double stints if needs be so, if it's OK with him, perhaps we should jump in and and register the team. If (when) we get a fourth Seek could swap to single stints.

Entry is by team rather than individually, with whoever makes the entry paying the entire amount (by IBAN transfer) and then assigning riders to his team (who pay him their share of the entry).

I entered the other two teams, one as myself and one pretending to be Pablo. I could pretend to be one of you however the process is such that it does make more sense if the entry is made by one of the team members, and I could talk whoever does so through if necessary. So if any of you three are willing to assume the role of Captain for your team please shout. smile

As this is less that a month away now, I thought the thread could do with a bump.

Any other Phers doing this?

We (the group of us from here) are now getting into the logistics of getting there, camping, Friday night euro-techno music etc.

Team PH are in parcels D87 and D88. with a couple of remote camps (the 24hr solo nutters).

Let us know your parcels and we can wave/shout insults as we pass each other.

Without the threat of a registered entry hanging over my head, I've found myself focusing on weight reduction instead of mileage.
So regrettably I'm out.

Will continue following this thread with interest though.

So that was Rad am Ring then... We were already planning 2017 before the 2016 race had finished, it was honestly the best weekend of riding ever. You camp on the GP circuit either side of the track in prebooked parcels, they are 7m deep and 3m wide so plenty of room for tents, trackside seating, somewhere to eat, relax etc, we got there on Friday evening, had a BBQ and a few beers and had a laugh.

Race starts at 1200 on Saturday which is quite convenient, there are loads of races starting at short intervals though, a 75km (3 lap) race, 150km, Juniors and then the 24s, both MTB and road.

There is a MTB course that runs next to the track, I assume its pretty much the route of the footpath around the circuit on race days. The MTBers rejoin on Dottinger Hohe, cross the start line, do about 1.5kms on the GP circuit then peel off and do their own thing. The roadies just ride the GP circuit and the Nordschleife which is quite an incredible 20kms of tarmac. It was my first time there so I didnt know what to expect, I've watched the youtube videos, watched tv coverage of the WTCC race, I know the history of the circuit and the Bellof 6:11 lap record but its just an incredible place.

You drop from 604m above sea level to 340m in 8 kms, then make all that height back in just 5 kms. There is a slight descent down to about 540m before a final climb back up to the GP circuit. Fastest speed we saw was 60.2mph...

Then on the Sunday morning, the circuit is open for people who just want to ride around the ring in a non-competitive event but it was all fine, loads of space and no one shouting, no wannabe-pros, just people riding bikes. As the 75/150kms race is on Saturday, the circuit is no busier than any other time and long enough for everyone to have some space although some good groups did form and work well together and some bloody strong cyclists, this being the Country that gave us Jens Voight and Tony Martin...

We had two teams of four and two soloists, the soloists did their own thing as and when, the teams of four largely kept to one lap on 3 laps off (which was roughly an hour on, three off) so enough for a bit of a stretch, something to eat, sleep, prep and back on it. Incidentally, the toilet/shower/catering is spot on, even German efficiency jokes dont do it justice just dont talk to Edd about full frontals... 95% of the field is German, a few Dutch, Belgians, Brits and Americans (USAF personnel we guessed!) but it was very friendly, everyone passing on encouragement, no aggro, no choppers...

The race finished and we went for a wander, there is a UCI 1.1 pro race on Sunday afternoon so if you are slow leaving, as we were, you are held back. We went to the shop to buy 'ring stickers for our bikes and then watched the pros.

Its pretty cheap too, entry per person was about 100 euros, factor in Channel Tunnel fees, petrol, beer money etc, travel together to reduce costs and its a great weekend with some mates and cycling for around £350... we even stayed in Liege on Sunday night (fuelled by my ambition to ride parts of Paris-Roubaix on the Monday morning which sadly didnt materialise for numerous reasons but not least because we had an epic steak et frites that night!)

So I think we have at least a dozen interested for 2017, a few soloists, maybe a "fast pair" and a team or two of 4, all roadies so some MTBers would be good company!?

And finally, the only other people who get to lap the full Nordschleife in darkness are the 24 hour Pro-AM GT drivers...

Can't argue with any of Pablo's post appart from the parcel size. They are 12m x 3.5m (we had two so 7 x 12) but in reality cam up a little small.

It was an utterly fantastic weekend of cycling with a road trip included (even though some of the group had a very strange idea of which direction to go in order to arrive at the ring in a reasonable time wink )

As already mentioned, we are already planning on the 2017 trip, learning from mistakes this time on how to make it even better next year.

Already looking forward to it.
