500 here, the battery constantly reads 100%, it can be fixed by letting it run down until it turns off, then re-charging but the fault comes back again after a couple of weeks.

A couple of times it has lost signal mid-ride too but that's only a very occasional occurrence and nowhere near as annoying as the battery.

Not sure I'd buy another Garmin, as they fobbed me off with the battery problem, then when it re-occurred the warranty had run out so they weren't interested.
I have that same battery issue! I'd forgotten about it to be honest, because it has never caused me an issue with running to empty while still showing the "Battery 100%" message on-screen.

Mine started to show the "100%" all the time after I left it in a drawer for over 4 months following a collision with a van. I thought perhaps storing it for that long fully charged had maybe caused the problem. Interesting to hear of someone else having the exact same issue. I had wondered about running it to empty to see if it would 'reset'. I might give that one a try now. Cheers! thumbup

7 year old 705 that works well and battery life is pretty good after all this time. Map is pants due to the small screen so just use it for stats.

I've had two 800s.

On the first one, the power button gradually failed over time until it wouldn't turn on at all any more. I wouldn't have minded paying a sensible amount for a repair, as it's the sort of part which I'd expect to maybe fail after lots of use, but Garmin don't do repairs, so I had to pay £80+ for a refurbished replacement when at most it will have cost them a fiver to fix it.

After about six months, the replacement developed a fault whereby it would no longer connect to my PC. From googling, this seems to be a pretty widespread problem caused by a small amount of moisture ingress into the crappy USB port cover.

At that point, I gave up.

Friday I read this thread. Having had, maybe, 2 examples in 4 yrs of losing rides on my Garmin Edge 500.

Saturday, I lost a ride!! Just gone. Nowhere to be seen.

It's like the puncture fairies (sssshhhhhhhhh).

Fortunately it was probably 25 of the slowest miles I've ever ridden, so I wasn't annoyed. But how beautifully poetic, nevertheless.

Garmin Edge 500 - Owned since December 2014 and i think it works as intended. It's simply i don't think it's very good! If i was viewing it in the context of my old FR410 rather than the 920XT i use now then i'd probably be happier with it. Having quite a number of speed, cadence, HR, etc sensors the 500 just can't cope. In the end I decided enough was enough and have bought an Edge 1000 (alongisde Vector 2S power meter pedals). I've not used this enough yet to really comment but have had one round of calibration difficulties with the power meter and found it trying to connect with my phone constantly irritating.

No direct experience of Garmin here but threads like this and talking to users means Garmin is pretty far from my shopping list. Speaking to a bloke on Sunday who's on his third set of Vectors and just about to fling them back at Garmin in disgust, along with his 1000.

My 500 Edge was great for a while but now gives a lot of duff data. Altitude is buggered and I've tried everything to fix it.

It makes a huge difference where I live as I'm basically on the side of a mountain!

That's the problem. I've been using my phone since I gave up on the Edge 800. It's not quite as good as the Garmin was (although it does get very close), and I wouldn't want to have it on the bars when I'm mountain biking (and the remote head units for Android are crap), but it's still streets ahead of any alternatives I've been able to find.

Garmin have such a hugely dominant market position from a technology perspective that they can afford to be staggeringly arrogant about customer service, because they know people have no realistic alternative to turn to. If ever a market desperately needed some strong competition, it's this one.

Their customer service seems to be quite strong. It's their product that isn't. I do think their monopoly has made them lazy when it comes to support and development but there does seem to be some competition on the horizon.

Still quite basic next to what the phone in your pocket is already capable of, but looks like a step ahead of the Garmin cycling products and is where I'd probably look if I was buying again.

Their customer service may be fine if you've got a product still under warranty. Go beyond that, and it's £80+ for every little thing that goes wrong, and you only get 3 months' warranty on the replacement. irked

My paid for replacement broke within 5 months, and the only answer from their customer services was "£80+ for a refurb, please", with no guarantee that it would last any longer than the previous one.

I had to start a small claims court proceeding before they agreed to refund me the cost of the original refurb, so in the end it cost them more, and left me frustrated, as all I wanted was to have the unit fixed without having to pay more for it.

I've just signed up to find out more when that elemnt actually goes on sale, but I'm not holding out much hope, as their rflkt wasn't up to much with Android, albeit better with Apple, I understand.

I've just had a closer look at that Wahoo device. £280 for a black & white 2.7" screened device???? I really can't see that worrying Garmin in a hurry, given that the Edge 1000 goes for that!

I know that people won't like hearing it but...

The only reason these things turn off mid ride is because you didn't press start and after a while it auto powers off.

You may be able to get around this by turning off the auto shut down, then you can just moan about it not saving the rides that you don't start.

wink

That's not been the case for me. Every ride I have ever done has begun with a press of the start button. There's been no recognisable pattern to the incidents where it turned itself off. It's been anything from a few minutes to a few hours into a ride when it's happened. 'Auto-off' has also been switched off for a long time, in case that was contributing to it.

Occurs while charging if for example the supply isn't sufficient, either using a dynamo without a cache battery and cycling slowly ie uphill or when using an external battery to charge. In both scenarios it will also power down if at any point the connection is lost due to vibration etc. The latter can be prevented to a certain extent using the heath robinson approach of an elastic band to hold the power lead in place.
In relation to the survey I firmly believe that the 810 is the most compromised unit- it cant receive GLONASS, whereas the other models can.
The hard reset required where you press every button at the same done when the unit freezes can only be done whilst stationary.
There are far superior navigational apps for smart phones TBH

Unfortunately if you actually use a smartphone with the screen on and navigating with said app, you'll be lucky to get past about 2hrs before it shuts down through lack of battery. Not to mention lack of weather proofing etc.

WRT garmin support, seems to be variable. My vectors are out of warranty, and yet they just sent me new pods gratis. They swapped my 910xt when it did the 'auto off' - some of the early units had problems. Guess maybe I've been lucky.. I shall hope to remain so smile
