Vertical hanging bike storage
Discussion
I mount my road bikes front wheel up and my mountain bikes front wheel down. Fox forks don't like being upside down all the oil ends up in the wrong part of the fork and they creak and make horrible noises and don't work very well if left upside down (I originally hung mountain bikes up by front wheel).
I put silverline ones a foot or so off the floor and the wall mounted Halfords ones between them, so all bikes are close enough to lockup and far enough to safely get them out with only a small clash of pedals and front tyres. I hang mtb forks down or on the floor, as Herman says about oil in Fox's, but mainly to stop them seeping out the seals. Road bikes are hung forks up on the wall , as 7kg of road bike isn't going to hurt the forks compared to my lardy arse hammering them on a descent. Done this for over 25 years and not dead yet.
I've looked on the 'auction site' for these hanging brackets available from a UK seller, and they are over twice the price! There are a few sellers who say they are uk, but delving further they are Hong Kong of China based. Anyway, I'm considering a purchase from one of the far-away places, having looked on the Royal Mail website, and found that they (Royal Mail) shouldn't charge any duty because the value is so low. Can anyone with experience of buying from Hong Kong advise if this is actually the case - I don't want to get clobbered with a fee by Royal Mail for 'handling' or duty where it's not due or a long dispute!
Thanks in anticipation.

Just got these 5 days after ordering. Cost me £8.59 in total, no postage or other fees. I've not unwrapped them but the weight of the package tells me they should be pretty robust !

Thanks for that info. Was there any indication they came from China or UK? They say uk stock, but they have been a member since 2010 in China - but maybe they now live in uk, or have a bulk delivery to uk , then stock is split. It's not clear what the situation is, but reassuring your experience was a good one.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-x-PRO-WALL-MOUNTED-MOU...

Not sure. It came via Royal Mail, so that ties in with the "UK stock" claim.nammynake said:

I've got some of these too. Arrived the other day, so I screwed them to the wall in the shed over the weekend to try them out.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-x-PRO-WALL-MOUNTED-MOU...
They seem to work fine once the bike is hanging, but seems hard to get the wheel under the hook. I have to lift the hook with one hand and lift and position the bike with the other, which is pretty tough even for a powerfully-built veloist like myself.
Am I missing a vital secret technique?

Mine arrived a couple of days ago as well...... Fantastic value. I see your issue with the hook (I had anticipated this) and indeed one of mine is quite stiff compared to the others. One way I can see of 'fixing' this is to just squeeze the part that goes around the hooks 'swivel' in the vice a little to tighten it (if that makes sense), therefore creating enough friction that it stays where it is moved to rather than just falling under gravity. They seem to work fine once the bike is hanging, but seems hard to get the wheel under the hook. I could do with a few hooks now, but I want to attach them to the inside of my new metal shed, but without drilling the shed. Possible?
If you had hooks with a large, flat backing plate like the one in the OP, you could try mounting them with high strength double sided mounting tape, like 3M VHB. If you used at least 50-60cm2 of one of the higher grades, it should support up to 10kg in shear quite happily. Worth trialing it if nothing else...Gassing Station | Pedal Powered | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
