If everything goes to plan, in about 6 months my daily commute will be reduced to 1 mile each way, almost all of it on either residential streets or segregated cyclepaths.

So I'd like to ditch the lycra and strava times and just have a leisurely ride into work and back. Normal work wear is a suit.

Any recommendations for a city commuter? Probably with a chain cover, disc or hub brakes and the ability to fit full mudguards and a rack.

Pinnacle Neon 1, nice, cheap reliable commuter with guard and rack mounts, eight gears so useful for longer rides too.

I'd drop the requirement for a chain cover because it's going to be very limiting, why use a cheap gaiter from an outdoorsy shop instead.

Halves the time on a bike though in bad weather, waterproofs and a brolly are hard to beat.

I appreciate the neon has rim brakes etc but hub gears and discs for a mile commute on segregated paths are a waste of money.

Walking doesn't satisfy my inner need for N+1 though smile

Quite liking the look of the Cannondale Hooligan 1 and walk when it rains.

I do 4 miles a day , in suit trousers and shirt and use a bitsa mtb bike on slicks and a road cassette, just because I had one. Not washed in a year and due one over the xmas break.

I'd get onto ebay and look for old steel racers, like these...

Other makes of old racers are available...

Walk, then get home warmed up and go for a decent ride.

Have a look at the paper-bicycle, its a really cool design with fully enclosed drive train and looks very stylish

Cycle four miles away from work, turn round and cycle to work- that way you can make it worth taking the bike.

BMX - a mile of no sitting and bunnyhopping off every available kerb will make it a lot more fun biggrin Stick your suit in a backpack.

Decathlon are good for euro-style practical bikes (guards, racks, dynamo lights, etc) at sensible money - http://www.decathlon.co.uk/C-376961-city-and-commu...

But yes, for a mile I'd probably just walk.

Thats a brilliant idea, a 24" cruiser with a sensible gear would be a laugh!

I have a 4k commute and use a singlespeed steel Voodoo for most of the year, but also have a DMR Wrath 24 street/park/DJ bike that occasionally gets used in the nicer weather when I don't need lights. Great fun boosting off kerbs and manualling everything in sight.. Not being able to sit and pedal is tougher than you think too!
