Bugger me that hurt....Corcoran. First sets weren't too bad, but the "attack and recover" sets were hard, especially that last one. I don't have my Garmin Edge (sent back for replacement....again) so I'm just doing indoor riding, that way I can still monitor my TSS.

I added a little effort on the end as I wanted 130-140TSS and without the garmin I can't see the "live" TSS.

Brutal but great workout that one.

Table rock for me on Thursday night, went well, but I found the second interval harder than I expected....then I discovered afterwards that the TT was set to level 3 instead of 1..... :-)

Vrynwy Velo tomorrow, first proper run out for the new bike, 73 miles and 6500ft of climbing, including the Bwlch y Groes.... :-0

Update from me.....

With the nights drawing in, I headed back into the garage last night for the first TT session of the Autumn...

I've picked the plan I was working on back in May, back up and did a 1 hour session of Table Rock.

All good, although the first 10 mins were a shock to the system - I think my CV system had a heart attack at the prospect.....finished in line with set level, so now looking to complete the plan over the next few weeks and then redo the FTP test.

Very apt bump. Am about to get stuck in to turbo training over the winter. Got a kinetic road machine for my birthday (well it's still at my parents but I know what's under the wrapping paper hehe). Been looking at all the various apps and think TR is the way to go. Zwift would be nice but will involve investment in IT equipment as my laptop and iPad aren't powerful enough and I haven't got wifi in the garage.

Hopefully I can work a couple of sessions a week around work and the two tiny people that have invaded my house in the last 2 years. Have started doing core strength stuff in the evenings, swimming once a week with the kids and a long outdoor ride on a Sunday morning.

Will be using virtual power which I'm sure will be fine for my level of fitness. Just need to show relative rather than absolute numbers.

My aim is to do a few sportives next year of 80+ miles, working up to doing my first 100. Current longest ride was a 52 miler a couple of weeks ago. Would be nice to do it in under 7 hours as that's what my cousin did London ride100 in biggrin

Any tips for training sessions or plans to get started with?

After joining my 7 year old son on his longest ride, 25km on Sunday over 2 hours, I jumped on the rollers to warm up. By god they are good fun but a fast 105-110 cadence at 52-11. Only resulted in circa 270w, so ok for stuff at or below FTP but intervals get a bit twitchy at 70kph ish!

I bought a fluid cyclops last year but not convinced with clamping the bike into a frame so may look at a kickr or similar. I also have. Wifi in garage issue but I already transmit via electrical sockets so easy (and I have tested it in the garage), so could just buy a new socket thing for the garage,

So could give swift a go again, tried it last year on rollers and it wasn't much fun, unless I find some with increase resistance. I did three months in the garage last year and I don't my riding out on the ride got any better not focused enough! Managed the Marmotte target for the year now need to get ahead of the game for next year.

I started with the TT back in January and up until the end of March was doing 2-3 sessions a week.

My job involves spending c20 hours a week driving, so it's a good break to head into the garage for a hour to work the stress of the day off.

I'm using a Tacx Flow semi electronic TT. It's not a smart TT but the settings are done via an electronic display.

I toyed with using Zwift, but after a 7 day trial decided to try Trainerroad out.

I like the structured training and you can dip in and out as time permits.

The FTP test takes a couple of goes to make sure you give your best and maximise your output for the full test time.

I've seen reasonable results albeit starting from a low base (compared to some on here) I started at 164W, then progressed to 192W, then 211W on my last test.

Based on my first session back last night, I would say I've maintained my power over the summer, despite doing longer, but more infrequent rides.

I'm looking forward to using it again over the winter months and pushing myself further up the power range, but also hoping to drop some weight to improve my performance on hills, where I currently struggle a little.

If you are looking for measured results ( based on whatever inputs you use...) based on structured training then Trainerroad should meet your aspirations.

Finally, to answer your question, start with Sweetspot base and build from there....

Thanks. Interesting reading about sweetspot training- sounds very similar concept to how I used to approach my training for 800/1500m running when I was younger. We just didn't call it that.

The sweetspot 6 weeks programme is just the start of it on TR

From there you could choose a programme geared towards your goals

That might 'just' be more sweetspot stuff, but it will probably be something like "General Build" and then "Enthusiast"

https://www.trainerroad.com/all-cycling-training-p...

You can always mix and match to suit how you feel on the day

Zwift has a 'Your First Century' plan

https://whatsonzwift.com/workouts/your-first-centu...

and a '4 week PRL prep' plan

https://whatsonzwift.com/workouts/4wk-prl-prep

Both of which you might find interesting

Hi all I've just bought a Tacx vortex to try and lose some weight over the winter months. Couple of questions would you recommend trainer Road or swift? Is there a piston heads training session or anything you lot do on here?

I tried Zwift before TR.

Didn’t get on with it, more like an arcade game than what I wanted.

TR has structure and if you follow a plan, it’s easy to see where you are going, in terms of sessions and more importantly measure your progress.

I like the structure it gives...

I had a free trial of Zwift and was a bit underwhelmed I like the idea of a structured plan I'll sign up for a month.

No shortage of structured plans on Zwift, or Sufferfest, or bkool or rouvy

e.g. for Zwift https://whatsonzwift.com/workouts/

e.g. for Rouvy https://rouvy.com/en/workouts

Hi Stu

The title of this thread is 'Trainerroad Expectations' so we might be a little bit biased... laugh

We do have a PH group so you can check up on how your fellow forum members are getting on. Some fairly committed people in there!!

Pistonhead - Pedal Powered

For what it's worth, I love the structure or TR and I've had some big gains this year, you can minimize the training bar and then watch netflix, iplayer etc Whatever you choose for your training it really helps if you have something to target. It's hard to get motivated and take yourself off for some pain if you have nothing to aim for!! hurl

Cheers

Just joined the ph tr group :-)

Not done any sessions yet though, turbo still in the box. Hopefully not for long, was going to crack on with it over the weekend but the weather looks very promising!

Any of you fellas have a code for an extended trial?

Purchased a Neo a couple weeks back, after a year of aimlessly riding around. Wanting to train properly over the winter so I can really shift along next year...

Been using zwift for the last couple weeks. Not done an FTP test yet, but during a normal zwift ride (up and downhill) I managed a 20min best of 291w and average of 289w over 27mins with sore legs after footy the night before.

Currently 89kg (fairly muscular, but carrying a bit too much burger and chips!) Going to start on the diet too and lean out, whilst trying to keep and increase my power...

Just got setup with a Tacx flow and joined trainer road.

20 minute FTP complete with a score of 164. Think I've got a ways to go! laugh

Well done!

Getting the TT out the box is the biggest step ( I have a few mates who didn’t get that far....)

I started at a similar level and during the course of this year have increased my FTP to 211w.

That’s a 28% increase...

That may go up again shortly, as I’m due another test...

The podcasts are quite good to listen to as well. Been listening to a few instead of music at work, good for explaining how the sessions relate to real scenarios and the structure of training plans etc. Obviously very US-centric but worth a go.

So yesterday I got my last 2 parcels- trainer tyre, big fan, iPad stand... no excuses to crack on with it now!

How do people set a target for their first FTP test? I appreciate that FTP tests are as much about learning the test as well as fitness. I know the numbers are very vague but recent longish rides I've uploaded to strava have estimated my average power about 175w, so aim for a bit higher than that and see how it goes?
