Trip computer or App

I've had trip computers of one sort or another for as long as I can remember.

On my last bike, I used to use this in combination with Strava.

On my Brompton, I thought I'd get a Quadlock and use my phone as a readout to display Strava and then not bother with a trip computer.

But it's nowhere near as good as I'd hoped. It's great to have in your pocket and to get all your data once you've stopped, but the free version only displays average speed. I upgraded to the premium version for a month to trial it, and I wasn't that impressed with it either. I does display current speed, but that's all. Doesn't say whether it's above or below average or all the other little things that even a cheap Trip computer would do.

And for £3.99 a month, it really isn't worth it (to me).

So, the question is, does anyone have a good free app. Or, failing that, do you have a trip computer you're happy with and are willing to recommend?

I've downloaded Ski Trax in preparation for my next ski trip and that has multiple displays options, only just thought that that might work as a display, but not tried it yet.

Thanks in advance.

What phone are you using?

I use IpBike on Android. I picked that one initially because I have ANT+ HR and Cadence sensors, and this seemed to be the only bike computer app on Android which supports them.

It's not the prettiest looking or the easiest of things to use, but it works well, shows truckloads of information, and uploads to Strava (and loads of other sites if you use them) once you've finished your ride.

So far, I've only used it as a simple bike computer, but it has all sorts of training functions, a built in map display to allow bike computer and GPS guidance on screen at the same time and all sorts of other stuff I've not even scratched the surface on.

There's a trial version so you can try it out and decide if it's right for you, and unlike most such trial licences, it's not measured in time. You get a million wheel revolutions before you have to buy the key, which by my reckoning is around 1,500 miles on a standard road bike, so plenty of time to get to grips with it! smile

I'll certainly be paying for the unlock key when the time comes.

I've got an iPhone. The only other spare I have is a windows phone, but then I can't attach that to my bike anyway. Plus, a million wheel revolutions on a Brompton is about a mile and a half. ;-)
