Evening,

Bad year on the bike last year (680miles all in!) compared to a few thousand the year before. Anyway last week I got fed up of being chubby and signed up for my first ever Sportive - Lionheart down in Somerset. I signed up to give myself a kick up the arse and a reason to train...

Massively out of shape but have put an 1 hour on the spin bike each day for the past week. Finally got my gear out today and went for my first ride since september - did a 45mile solo, which was relatively straight forward - tired, but not absolutely hanging! Planning to keep the spinning going each day with progressively longer rides each weekend - should be in shape in time.

Any of you signed up this year? As at the moment I am riding alone as my friends have jibbed...

Cheers

I've done it a few times, route is pretty good, it's usually the same roads though and alternates between clockwise and anti clockwise.

It's rolling terrain but not particularly tough although the weather can make it a challenge, one year we had snow for most of the day... there are as few short sharp climbs, the feature climb, King Alfreds tower is good fun but the road is full of people pushing and wobbling rather than keeping to one side which is frustrating, then they all stop in the road at the top to wait for their mates....

Get there really early, in previous years they close the entrance road to let each batch out as it's part of the route. Might have changed that for 2016.

Feed stations are empty pretty quick too so don't rely on them, those pictures on the web of tables piled high with food don't exist.

Enjoy it, the final Sprint down the hill to the house is good fun.

Cheers pab. The downhill is good fun, I live fairly local so have done it before!

It was my first ever Sportive back in 2013, and I'm still riding, so it must be alright. Proper full on snow though. As I remember, about 50% of the entrants either aborted or didn't make the start line that year...

We pulled out in the snow year due to loosing mates in the blizzard and watching people slide out . Did it in 2014 and was good fun. We had all the weathers, of thunder and hail and rain and wind. Food stations were fine for me. Maybe I took too much smile. That climb from the start round the park and up from cold does wake the lungs up a bit. Alfreds Tower was a potholed hell with a full stream running down it. Been and done and was pretty well organised and lots of goodies at the end.
