As rider of both road and mtb, this made me laugh a lot!

As has been said, change the saddle. I think mine came from Aldi when they had a bike stuff sale so wasn't much, fits my bum perfect cloud9

Get your arse measured and get the saddle that fits it. Hard ones are often more comfortable than soft ones - the shorts do the padding job.

I went from 1 Selle Italia Saddle (SLR) to another (Flite) and it made a world of difference. One is 10mm wider than the other and my backside apparently needed it. That was on my mountain bike and when I bought a road bike the first thing I did was buy another SE Flite and it works a treat on rides up to a century.

For the record, so do I, so all said in jest. One of the few areas of PH these days were offence isn't taken, nor intended.

Five miles isn't long for any saddle to hurt you too much, so I would suggest the saddle isn't positioned anywhere near correct for you so try playing with the positioning.
This.

And I would suspect it is too high, as this is a very common cause of saddle sores. Otherwise, you shouldn't have an issue with sores unless you are riding often and doing big miles.

A less likely culprit, but big contributor to comfort is the angle. Many saddles should be set level from front to back and micro adjusted from there, but more modern designs often require a flat nose. Would check with the saddle manufacturer.

I may have got a bit confused, having just googled images of them (glad I hadn't eaten!), it isn't saddle sores I have. Just pain when on the bike, which by the sounds of it is just a case of getting on with it and getting as much time as possible in the saddle as possible.

Today was my longest ride, 10.7 miles. It honestly felt pretty good. Only came back as I was bored (doesn't take long!). Arse didn't hurt until towards the end.

Strava says I hit a top speed of 47mph...find that hard to believe, but if true bloody scary!

One thing I need to work on is my water intake. I've yet to master the skill of cycling and drinking, and don't like stopping as I hate starting again, when I do stop I drink most of my 600ml bottle in one go. I am waiting for a Camelbak though so hopefully that will help.

I probably don't drink enough during the day anyway, which won't help.

Yes. Drink & eat whilst moving, little at a time. It's not difficult to learn to use a bottle whilst moving. Start ride well hydrated ie urine clear or nearly clear in colour, so you don't need to carry or drink as much on the move.

Eat?! I'm guessing it's not a take away pizza!

Is this something I need to worry about for my short rides at the moment? Or how about when I'm doing the London to Brighton?

Im planning a 60 mile ride on B/H Monday

This one if anyone is interested in joining? (Folkestone, Kent > Reculver and back)

This will be my longest ride so far, I done a 50 miler, and had to stop and get a sausage roll and a drink ( i have 2x water bottles and almost emptied them both!). For this 60 miler, Il bring along a few of these energy gel things and see how i get on with them. I have not used them before, but people say good things about them.
