Never use arse cream

Might be able to get away without shorts, wouldn't fancy my balls bouncing around though

Assos crème works fine for me, better than Blue Morgan. I have forgotten to apply crème and can tell the difference.

Sitting on my old saddle compared to the new is nights and day difference.

5-10 psi difference in the tyres can make for a significant difference in perception of damage to the landing gear!
Talking of pressures...mine are currently 100PSI as that's what it said on the pump for a road bike. Is this too much? (I am 127kg if that makes a difference).

Am I just lucky?
Perhaps, I might be too.

I do the standard-ish 40-60 miles each club ride, usually at least one a week but sometimes a couple, plus some commuting and the occasional bit of XC and I usually top out at about 80-100 miles a week. Not huge distance compared to some, but I'm usually in the saddle for 4-5 hours at a time at least once per week.

My saddle is the same one my Genesis came with and although I wear padded shorts (Sugoi, Giordana and Giessegi, definitely nothing in the £2-300 bracket) I've never used cream, nor have I ever felt like I would need or want to.

Maybe it's like that adult nappy fetish, once you start you love the feeling of it so much you just can't stop? laugh

The purpose of arse cream is to stop you getting bacterial infection from the sweat in your pad. It won't make it any more comfy to sit in the saddle but believe me, if you are riding each day and get an infection, the next few days will be excruciating.

You're right, but it absolutely is a friction reduction agent also, that is as important as the reason you mention.

15 mile ride after work today, wasn't to keen on going as was up at 4am Friday, and 6am today, but glad I did. Longest ride I've done.

1:15 with a average speed of 11.9mph (I know compared to some that's a snails speed!).

Most importantly, my arse doesn't hurt! My legs did from the sodding hills. It was enjoyable as well.

Arrrgggg I've the start of sore appearing. Although it's a bump, the skin hasn't broken through yet. So what's the best course of action as I'm due spend 6 days cycling in Majorca in 4 days time? Sudecrem, Savlon or other potion?

It's purely down to riding time as I've had the same saddle since build.

Tea tree oil cream on the spot, clean shorts before every ride, shower or wash after every ride, as much fresh air as possible down below.

I actually found the chammy cream tended to give me spots like that.

I'm another one who's signed up to do L2B - only 15 years since I last did it . . .

Wish we had some hills around here to practice on, I'm not looking forward to Ditching Beacon much.

Get some Lancane anti-chafing gel , it's bloody great stuff but a little dear.

Cheers Chaps. Picked up the tee tree oil today and I'll chuck the Lancane in the bag just in case.

You can have the fking hills around here!

My longest ride today. 23.7 miles. 1,282ft of climbing, my legs are still burning!

The first half was too easy...so kept on going. I was only planning to do a 10/15 miles, but as it felt so easy I kept on going. Turns out it was slightly down hill with the wind behind me. Meaning on the way back, uphill and into the wind.

But, still enjoyed it. Was good fun.

Has anyone mentioned that the prevailing winds come from the South at that time of the year and we'll be cycling . . .due South

Am I helping?

It's downhill though isn't it? As London is above Brighton on the map.

I've been riding solidly since Feb. I currently have a Selle Italia G2 saddle and it is hugely uncomfortable. I did have a charge spoon but didn't find that good, although that was early on and perhaps I didn't give it enough chance.

Did 75km yesterday and was in agony after about 80 mins.

I am large 6'5'', 17 stone (yes lose weight fatty etc, lost 2 stone since March :-) )

Anyone recommend a good saddle for the larger gent? Should I try the spoon again, guess it wont hurt (pardon the pun) for one ride as the current saddle sucks.

Bloody hell, not surprised you have a sore arse! Even the pro guys sleep between races.

You must have thighs of steel.

Both the saddles you mention seem to be well regarded and I doubt there was something inherent in them that causes you to get so sore, so quickly.

I'm no expert and I'm sure there are some saddles and weird anatomies that will never work together, but in my limited experience a saddle that unrideable is maybe less to do with the saddle per se and more about rider position?

Having the weight in the wrong position will quickly make something very painful. When I don't quite get the gym spin bike set up correctly I notice it within minutes and have to change it otherwise it's unbearable after half an hour.

On the road I can go all day without any major ache or tenderness but I've spent a bit of time trying to get a 'proper' position on my own bike.

I'm sure that won't stop someone claiming that "x saddle is the comfiest ever" and they never have a problem on it, but that's hardly a guarantee that it will work for me, you or anyone else. I'm sure many of the thousands of people who happily ride Charge Spoons or Selle Italia G2s would claim the same.

I know Gruffy had some travails with his saddle in anticipation of the TCR and ended up having to spend a lot of time (and, presumably, money) to get a comfy saddle, but for the rest of us bimbling around on a Sunday for 4 or 5 hours I can't imagine that a solution can be too far away.

Thanks you could be right about the position. I get elbow pain as well so I doubt my position is optimal.

Will set it up on the turbo tonight and have a tinker.

I am sure my weight doesn't help. Not a lot I can do about that quickly though. It is going.

3 if you don't want the Pro or S-Works version, 143mm, 155mm and 168mm for the Expert.
