Had an eventful off-road/gravel hack ride on Friday when my mates rear dérailleur hanger snapped in the New Forest. It was pouring with rain and we were at least 20 miles from home/vehicles....

Luckily we had a chain tool and managed to remove the dérailleur and turn his GT Grade into a single speed so that it was ride-able, but it got me thinking about how much a pain in the ass a catastrophic mechanical could be, especially if it happened a long way from home....

My mate sent me this link - Lexham Cycle Recovery it cost £15.00 a year for up to 3 call-outs. Has anyone used them (or another scheme)?

If you are ever going on a ride too far to push back carry as a minimum:

Spare mech hanger (that fits your frame!)
Spare gear cable
Couple spare split links
Spare brake pads
2x spare inner tubes
pump
multi-tool that can do every bolt/screw on your bike
A little duct tape
10x zip ties

Should see you out most situations you might find yourself in and weights hardly anything!

I Was about to poo poo this and waffle on about cyclists needing to be self sufficient, as we should, but could be handy for solo off road ventures in the wilds, etc.

I guess they pay for a taxi to the nearest bike shop, train station, etc.

No T&Cs on website, but they are going to email a copy to me.

Agree with some of that, but blimey that would fill a rucksak!

OP: It seems really cheap, £15 for UK coverage? Who do they contract out to do it? If I break down in the middle of Wilts, who will come and get me?

The further / more remote I go more I take though, but only enough to get me home,

It does look like they will just call you a taxi which will, based on your location, take you to a train station, hotel, bike shop or your house dependant upon the time of day.... could be beneficial for the bikepackers but they are a resourceful bunch who wouldnt give up on a ride just because they are forced to go singlespeed....

Yeah but unforseen stuff like broken frame or fork etc.

Anyway I have the T&Cs, which aren't on their website.

Looks worthwhile for far flung* adventures, you have to have a fully functioning mobile phone in coverage though and a couple of questionable bits I've found so far in the Exclusions:-

3. Any incident where the Pedal Cycle is being used for a use not specified in the design and manufacturers specifications, or arising directly out of the unreasonable use of the Pedal Cycle on unsuitable terrain.
4. The recovery of You and Your Pedal Cycle if repairs can be carried out at or near the scene of the incident within the same working day.

*at least 1 mile by public road from insured address. But I'm thinking specifically solo off road adventures.

Also does cover recovery of you and bike if you injure yourself. All cover is UK ONLY - but all of it.

The last time I got stranded I ended up walking to the nearest train station a few miles away.. Then I found out no trains were running and I wasn't allowed on the replacement bus service.. Then I found out that despite it being fairly late on a Sunday, there was a bike shop open for another 30 minutes or so.. Halfords saved the day.

Phone the Wife.

This could be quite expensive and time consuming if you don't already have a Wife.

I'm not really helping here.

Bit of a list I agree but the only big things are the tubes and pump, if you are smart about it you can tape at least one inner tube in the corner of your seat-post/top tube if you want to be total enduro.

I might be missing the point here, but if all they do is phone a taxi for you then why not save the bother and phone your own taxi?

They pay for it biggrin

Or a helicopter in the middle of the Cairngorms. I am intrigued so might have to ask!

hmmmm them phoning for a taxi is ok, but what happens if you are plastered head to toe in mud, you and the bike and 30 miles from home, cant see many taxi companies helping!

Speaking of tape, the amount of things a roll of insulating tape has fixed whilst out in the sticks in unreal, from a water bottle with a lost lid, to a frame that snapped!

How many times in the last decade have you had a mechanical so bad you've had to resort to calling a taxi though? £150 pays for a lot of taxis...

Actually, if they take you all the way home maybe it's not so bad. I hadn't read their site properly and assumed it was just to the nearest rail station. My bad.

Limited use.

They will send and pay for a taxi to nearest bike shop/station/hotel/car hire place.

BUT you have to be reachable by road.
