Hi

Was looking for opinions on this bike := Genesis Croix de Fer Titanium Small Titanium 2016 - http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Genesis-Croix-de-Fer-Ti-20...

I know nothing about Genesis and wondered whether I should be looking elsewhere.

I fancied Di2 but not a deal breaker.

Moving on from a Cannondale 29er XT - will be used daily for 30mile round trip commute and for weekend cycles in South Wales and along the Thames!

thanks

For that budget I'd build up a nice Kinesis Granfondo Ti Disc if you want Titanium. Don't know why you want cyclocross bike though?

I'd buy the Lynksey Cooper if i wanted a ti cx bike but it depends if its a CX bike because you want to do some loose surface gravel road stuff or to go racing. If its the former, have a look here and probably get the Genesis Datum. if its the latter, I'd get a Cannondale, Kona or Ridley.

Tredz are useless too.

How about this? Well within budget & Di2 also.

£3k for a recreational/commuter CX rig, bloody hell, the world's gone mad....
I just converted a Boardman hybrid to a 2x10 CX commuter, it owes me about £300, rides beautifully.

I know its the done thing to rec one's own bicycle but have you considered a Spesh Diverge?

I have the aluminium version and its completely brilliant for how I use it which sounds very similar to your requirements
3k would buy you some carbon sweetness, theres a lot of love on this board for the Diverge

My other bike is a full on crosser which annihilates the Diverge off road (where the Div is actually pretty happy) but would not be my choice for a winter club ride or commute as it doesnt take mudguards - essential for each of the previous in my opinion - and is too focussed to be comfortable for a 4h road bimble

The aluminium ones also have rack mounts, not sure of carbon frames but the fork will definitely accept a low loader pannier on most models

some interesting replies, here are my thoughts:

sounds like you're not going racing you just want a flexible go anywhere do anything type bike. a CX bike or a gravel bike will be just fine. they are a better bet than a road bike with fat tyres as the geometry will be more relaxed and therefore more suitable to any 'offroad' cycling you do. plus you will typically have wider clearance for fatter tyres should you wish.

i totally rate titanium as a material for a bike, i have a titanium cross / gravel bike and swear by its comfort on and off road. i sold a carbon and aluminium bike once i got the ti bike as i just didn't use them anymore - i simply didn't want to, the titanium bike was too comfortable!

as far as the genesis is concerned i know the brand well, i used to own a vapour and have kept up with their developments and what they do. the croix de fer is a great bike and the model you are looking at is basically the dogs wotsits so i have no hesitation in recommending that to you. importantly it has hydraulic disc brakes which are superb, especially if you end up doing 'mountain bike' rides on it. the frame should be compliant enough to soak away a lot of the bumps.

i use my bike as a commuter and long distance - 25mm tyres in the summer, 32mm plus guards in the winter. i also use it for offroad and put 700x40 tyres on (i have a spare set of wheels with a fitted cassette) and a manual dropper post. i believe the croix de fer also has flexibility for tyre size as well.

here's a picture of my bike on offroad livery, with mavic crossmax slr's from my 29er and 700x40 Smart Sam tyres:

Tsk tsk, what are you doing? Don't you know the rules? The man wants to buy a new bike, he wants guidance on buying an expensive new thing. The last thing he wants to hear is "you can get something to do the same job very well indeed for a few hundred quid".

Have some decorum, man.

Custom build on a Van Nicholas, nice bit of titanium and get your favourite groupset on it.

If you were racing, would buy a pair of £1500 bikes, and enjoy the delight of a clean bike at half time.

Funnily enough I had to sneak the Boardman past the wife - she was less keen than me on the idea of bike #6

Hi

Sorry for the delay in posting.

My wife has the Cannondale CAADX 105 - and I love the way it handles and its general geometry.

I really fancied Di2, no reason beyond I like the idea and reviews seem sound - so that was the basis of my search.

Previously I had a titanium framed DH bike and loved it. I also ran a Dura Ace Cannondale road bike - 15 years back. Quite possibly a case of all the gear no idea ;-)

I am a gym nut, so the idea of getting something racy and reliable was so that I could drop some evening gym and hit the road.

I am fed up of pushing the 29er - I simple do not enjoy the position or geometry on the road / path. I did consider a wheel swap - but I do not think that will change my enjoyment. Wrong bike for West London.

Perhaps the above will help suggestions :-) Is going road bike with new wheels an idea - due to my lack of knowledge as to where I will end up ... TT perhaps??!!! *arggg* Hard decisions to be made!!!

That bike looks really cool, what frame is it?
