Clearly, we all like different things, but wanted to get an idea of what you guys tend to eat whilst on the go on longer rides (eg 70+ miles).

Generally, I don't stop whilst out on the bike so I need something that can be easily accessed. Gels are great, but it's also nice to have something to actually eat. I used to have SIS GO energy bars which are great, but lately I've been making my own kind of bars.....heat up some honey, coconut oil and peanut butter in a saucepan, blend some oats with mixed dried fruit in a blender, then mix all together....once done lay out on a baking tray and bake for 25mins.....job done.

sandwiches are great if you stop, but can be fiddly when actually still cycling smile

Bananas mainly but I did carry a meat pie 40 miles for a snack last week

The whole energy market is dodgy in my opinion, I prefer real food

Whilst by no means an athlete I have done the Marmotte a few times powered by Sportcommunication's famously poor quality baguettes and brie - actually the cheese could have been anything at all TBH not necessarily brie

If gels and bars work for you then thats absolutely fine, but I know what suits me and its cheaper and often a lot more tasty
The last Etaoe I did had some rather lovely quiche yet people were shovelling powders into their bidons in preference

Very rarely ride that sort of distance without stopping, but I favour a good peanut butter and jam roll or similar for some "proper" food, supplemented with a few bananas. Would much rather stop and have a proper bit of grub with some mates though. Part of the journey is the stopping itself biggrin

Usually any of the following; museli bars, Haribo, malt loaf and lately I've been taking those individually wrapped crepes filled with Nutella from Tesco, which are already all rolled up and can be folded in half in a pocket and eaten a bit like an ice-pop while riding.

cut the tops off granola bars before you set out, put them in your pocket upside-down because that's both they way you'll grab and need them and if it rains they wont fill up.

Fig rolls, nutella and banana sarnies, wine gums but mostly energy bars. Not a huge fan but I love all day rides and if you want to carry enough for the day then they are the best bet. Normally have 3 or 4 different ones on the go - SIS, Powerbar wafers and Etixx ones at the moment.

I draw the line at gels though. Foul things

I'm not a fan of SIS energy gels, they're quite thick.... Try high5 isogels if you haven't. They're basically of the same consistency of a drink.... Maybe a tad thicker but not much.

For my everesting ride (410 km) I mainly relied upon jelly babies and fig rolls, although I don't normally use gels I did find them handy towards the end.

Fig rolls and pork pies, boom! Word of warning, I developed an allergy to Bananas, was eating about 10 a week. Nothing serious, itchy skin and a trout pout, but haven't eaten one for a couple of years. Everything in moderation...

I don't mind them cold and often eat them at my desk at work, plus after an hour in a back pocket on a warm day.... laugh
