Finally managed to persuade my Dad back on his bike yesterday (my old bike, which used to be his old bike) after a lengthy absence with a promise of going out every other day. After an ankle replacement a good few years ago he has done nothing exercise wise and the beer belly has long taken over.

Yesterday he managed 5 miles at what I regarded as a decent pace for someone so unfit. From that ride, the only complaint from him was the dreaded saddle soreness. I've told him he needs to man up and just get on with it, but he's having none of it. I really want him to carry on cycling and don't want him to give up and use this an excuse.

The bike (flat bar Dawes hybrid) has a fairly old Selle Royal gel saddle (don't know the model), it has no dip or cut out in the middle which I don't think is helping much. Is there a comfortable saddle that you guys would recommend for an OAP carrying a little too much weight around the mid-drift?

Brookes, it will mould to him in time, not the other way round...
