I currently have a Planet X stealth, size XL. I had a bike fit done recently and the fitter said that the bike was in essence too small for me. Apparently Planet X bikes come up small and all have a low Stack height in comparison to some others - seems to be common on cheaper bikes.

We made some tweaks to get the bike comfortable for this season but his advice was to sell it and get something else. I hate the bike, it just feels wrong and don't enjoy riding it, even with the changes. The fitter has tweaked again and he has said it is the best he can get it. We've swapped the stem, saddle, aerobars.

I had changed the wheels and groupset on it so I probably only need a frame.

Currently looking at a Cervelo P3 or Spesh Shiv, both of which have a much bigger stack height. The P3 has some odd BB set up it seems, will a normal Ultegra chainset work on that frame?

Might even consider a 2nd hand P5 if I can stretch to it.

Any other suggestions for big tall chap? Bike will be used for 40km TT , mostly within an Oly distance tri.

Argon 18.

I have an E116 and it's great. I'm 5'11@ and my medium one is arguably a touch big but I quite like that it stretches me out a touch. My mate who is 6'3" has the large in the same frame and there is definitely room for the seat to go higher on that.

You're right on the PX bikes being small. I also have a medium stealth and while you wouldn't expect one manufacturer's "medium" to be the same as anothers it is a noticeably smaller frame than the Argon in all the key measurements.

Proper answer is to have the fitter sort you out on a sizing bike, and give you 'ideal' stack / reach measurements to select a new frame from.

P3 (new variety) has a bbright bottom bracket. That'll take plenty of 30mm crank axles natively (but some are a bit short, you'd need to check for bbright compatibility). Shimano cranks (24mm axle) will need either shims (wheels mfg / similar), or replacing the bearings in the BB with a rotor 4624L bottom bracket which takes the 24mm shimano natively, but fits in the BBright shell. Make sure it's the L variant, a std 4624 is not for bbright..

Height isn't the issue per-se, that would lead you to a larger bike. What you appear to want is a bike that is taller (more stack) for a given length (reach)

Yeah the fitter said to go back and he will do a set up on the Muve bike. Its annoying shelling out another 200 notes for another fit but if I am going to be spending £2K plus on a frame its worth it.

Just wanted to get an idea of the bikes that are around and what people recommend. Need to set a budget and earn enough brownie points from the wife before I book the fit!

If you have a look at the slowtwitch stack and reach database you might be able to get some ideas. Note that the older (classic?) cervelos, are a very different geometry.. very much long and low (just in case you consider a secondhand one)

Cool thanks. The Aragon 18 recommended above has the same stack as the Planet X.

Cervelo, Scott, Cannondale, Felt and Trek all seem to have stacks bigger than the PX.

Don't forget to consider reach as well (and forget the 't-shirt' size) L/XL/whatever means nothing.

Cannondale make tt's that are short and tall; in recent years most bikes have become short*er* and tall*er* as tri tends to provide more of a market than TT. You may well not need the bike to be shorter, perhaps just bigger overall (a larger size will increase in both stack and reach)
