Here's the first instalment, covering the final 48 hours before the race: the storm before the calm http://wp.me/p6RY6c-1Qk

Well done Gruffy.
Great read - sounds like a non too ideal build up!
Looking forward to the next instalment.

Found it, read it and was waiting for the next instalment before he even posted on here (I've been waiting that eagerly for the write up that I've been checking the blog a few times a day just in case lol)

Give the bloke a chance, he's probably catching up on work, renovation plans, food and getting rid of his chest infection!

I shall not forget the assistance I got from Gruffy on the PH Cambridge to London TdF ride.

I'd been arsing about dropping off the group to take random pictures, and to ride BMX tracks, then catching up. This exuberance eventually caught up with me, and by Epping Forest I'd seriously begun to fall off the back of the ride. Justin offered to pace me back behind The SAAB, but I was nervous about drafting behind a car. Cue the appearance of the main man. Strong, and patient with it, he sat in with me and paced me back up to catch the group, and he still had the legs to get off the front of the ride through Docklands to get ahead to get some great photographs of the rest of us. A real gentleman, along with his ability on the bike.

Well done, Gruffy! thumbup

Many congrates on you're trans race completion, really enjoyed watching you're progress & the 1st blog , still think you are absolutely fking nuts,

Can i ask where you got your bag that sits under you're crossbar from ? i'm attempting my first Audax in a few weeks time & those Apidura bags seem well overpriced to me .

It's all Alpkit Neil iirc. Custom frame bag.

Quality stuff but sporadic stock supply.

Yeah, cheers Rich, Gruffy did e mail me back with the details.

Seems a bit dear to me when i may only be using it once or twice, there are cheaper options that i will pursue.

i just want it for one day just to keep, gels, jelly babies & some bottom cream in it.

I've got a set for bikepacking but for long day rides I use a handlebar bag. Not gay at all, honest!

Just need a narrow one to not interfere with controls, and ideally a front hinged lid.

I use the medium Alpkit top tube bag and I find that's big enough for one-day adventures. During the race that held my food, suncream, chamois, battery pack, tool and some cables. The large one is enormous, but I found it a bit too wide for my lanky legs, particularly when climbing. It's good quality stuff, as Richard said. Most of the different manufacturers' stuff looks like it'll take the punishment but I can now say for certain that Alpkit's stuff definitely does. I gave it hell and aside from the mud and grime it shows absolutely no signs of wear. Very happy to recommend them.

I see a lot of people using the Apidura stuff as well. Any first hand comments or experience? Got the medium stem pack and medium saddle pack - about 15L capacity I think. Seem to be very well put together bits of kit.
