Hi All,

I know I may be asking the impossible here but it's worth a try, so I've been enquiring about the new Ceramic Daytona REF 116500LN ever since I saw it as Basel world this year. Immediately I called the majority of AD's in London to be told the same thing - Join the waiting list and don't expect anything for this year as our top customers will have priority on the list.

As I also spend a lot of time in Switzerland for work, I tried my chances at the AD's here and had a bit more luck as I was told there are no waiting lists and I should check back in regularly. So Since the end of May I have been calling up every week, and seemed to be getting fobbed off (wont go in to too much detail on here. In a nut shell they subtly hinted after weeks of my calling up that they will be saving the new Daytona pieces for their top customers.

Is there anyone on here that has the right contacts, any alternative suggestions to help me find this piece, at either retail or close to. I'm not in the business of throwing my money down the drain so not interested in paying 8k over list as the current bubble market is demanding.

Thanks in Advance!

If the current bubble market is demanding 8k over list i think it unlikely someone is going to offer you one for retail i'm afraid.

Beautiful watch, the cheapest I've seen one so far of the very few for sale is 6k over list though.

Sounds like you best buy a few more watches to get to the top of their lists!

If anyone knew of any places selling for retail price with availability, by the time you get to them I'm sure that won't be the case!

Don't actually know what list is but spotted one in London for sale - £16000 for a black face. Burlington arcade I think. Whatever list is, that's a massive premium.

Collecting mine Friday - been offered £5k overs for it. Not a chance I'll sell.

As said above until things settle down you'll need to have bought a few other pieces from your AD, and have a good relationship with them.

I've bought two others myself this year and sent numerous colleagues and clients to them recently too. I scratch their back, they scratched mine.

Oh and FWIW £15k for one is nuts, negotiate hard on a white gold one for not much more than that!

Congrats, I'm jealous! Just out of interest what colour face is it that you're getting, I've only seen the black face so far, yet to see a white one.

I got one last week - black face - paid list. It was part of the deal for buying a Patek 5712 which is also difficult to get. Just lucky really as I walked into the AD by chance. By coincidence, I was chatting to the manager of a very large Rolex AD this afternoon and mentioned that I had got one. He was amazed and said that they are having big problems getting them from Rolex as the supply is very limited.

At Le Mans this year they had both a black and a white face in the boutique. I wonder if France has more available?

They weren't for sale and the dealer suggested they were the only display models in France.

I did try to buy the white dialled version.

Makes the £3670 I paid for my Daytona's years ago look like more of a bargain than I thought.

Whoever pays £15k for one needs their head examining .

Is it only the ceramics making a premium?

I was offered an stainless steel and 18ct yellow gold bi/colour watch, gold face (or champagne as they call it), granted its registered March 16, but unworn, at £1500 under list price,

good deal or an undesirable watch?

Thank you - White face for me as I've got a Bi-Metal GMT II with a black face.

It's usually only the Stainless steel Daytonas that fetch the above list price premiums, as demand for these pieces are usually greater than gold/Bi models. Part of the reason for the high demand of the stainless steel models is due them being more 'affordable' but its actually ironic, as in the grey market the extremely high demand for the stainless steel Daytonas has pushed prices up to the equivalent or even greater than the bi-metal models (in the case of the new ceramic SS Daytona).

However as long as the hype and demand is there and Rolex still limit the amount of SS Daytonas they make, these pieces will still be fetching unjustifiable prices.

Back to your question is a bi-metal Daytona an undesirable watch? Absolutely not, but as with most bi-metal and all gold Rolxes they are readily available, which for some may not have the same prestige of owning a hard to acquire piece. I was considering a bi-metal Sub at one point but the steep depreciation put me off. As you say you were offered £1500 off list I think that will be enough to hedge against a big chunk of the depreciation. It really comes down to how long you intend to keep the watch, if you are planning to chop it in after a year or two be prepared to lose some money, if you are planning to hold on to it, I'm sure the cash value of the watch wouldn't matter too much to you. At the end of it, you just have to go for whatever you fancy!

Thanks Prabs,

Very informative, and appreciated!

Must admit I prefer the s/s ones too and would much rather wait for one at the right price

Cheers, Beanie

Same here, I was offered a deal in Monaco on a white gold/brown leather that wasn't much more than that. It's the emperor's new clothes again......

I'll take mine with a black face to match my rust bucket old 911 that a dealer let me buy off him for a hundred grand.

Have you been into the Rolex boutique at the bottom end of Bahnhofstrasse? They definitely have a waiting list, as I'm on it. They also had a "prototype" that you could try on. Which reminds me - I need to go in and see where I am on the list, as they hinted it wouldn't take too long. I do have some history with them though: I bought my current Daytona from them and that took about 3 months to arrive. I'm of a mind to flip this though to be honest, as the premiums people are paying are crazy!

Yes, I was in there last weekend funnily enough I do remember putting my name on the waiting list around April time, so I went in to check if they had a clearer idea of when I could be receiving the watch and they didn't have me down on the list for some reason. So I gave my details again and now assume I am somewhere ridiculously low down in the in the pecking order. I've been to Beyer too, found the staff at Beyer to be quite snobby to be honest, and when I asked if they can source me a Daytona even though I haven't purchased anything from them previously I was greeted by a snotty smirk. For that reason I didn't bother to even get my name on their list.
