I may be missing something here, but....

A car is being transferred between family this weekend. How can this be done without one of the owners having to pay for a month twice? The DVLA online cancel road tax page only works Monday to Friday.

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-refund

It was so much easier when the tax went with the vehicle.

Thanks.

Current owner cancels tomorrow, new owner taxes it Monday morning.

Or cancels Saturday ( is available upto 6pm ).

Current owner waits until end of next month before they cancel and complete the transfer.

But the V5 needs to be sent off, won't that cancel the tax, and then it'll be untaxed?

Or are you suggesting not sending off the V5? Family want to transfer the car asap (which is used daily), there seems to be no way to do this and not pay tax twice.

In practical terms - current keeper posts V5 and declares last date of their keepership as last day of the month (or even one day before). DVLA should refund all remaining full months. New keeper taxes online on Monday using the new keeper supplement.

The lag in the system will mean that it shows as taxed during the transition if anyone bothers to check.

Totally unrelated, but oddly it works in a similar manner to the Blue badge for disabled persons scheme.
There is a £10 charge for the badge, but if the badge is issued on the 29th June, the next renewal date is the 1st June in the relevant year.

In other words - That's the way it is, learn to live with it.

There is a delay in the DVLA system so it won't show as taxed/untaxed.

Car is "sold" on last day of month.

New owner tries to tax it after 6pm, or whatever the cut off is on Saturday, but can't.

Car is then taxed on Monday, but effectively from the beginning of the month, i.e. the Sunday.

Do you dare risk it?

This sounds the best idea.

There's a telephone number you can call to transfer the tax over. I didn't believe it when a buyer told me but I called and the DVLA moved the tax into his name and told me how much money I should get from him for the remaining tax. I did have the number but seem to have lost it.
