Just wait for the next stage, where you come up to the lights and unclip, lights change you think youve engaged only for your shin to scrape all the way down the pedal, your foot to hit the road and yet another way of falling off a bike discovered.

That's the thing with cycling though, falling off is inevitable. It's just a case of when and how much it's going to hurt.
Can all the falling off I did as a kid count ?

On SPDs swap your cleats from the std SH51s to Multimode SH56s and you'll be fine. I tell all the little kids at our club to start with them.

For roadies use Look Keo Easy

Make sure you get these. Far easier to unclip - multi directional

Mustn't have been you behind me on that muddy rutted track last time I ventured to Swinley. wink

Can't have been me, as like I say, I've *ahem* never failed to unclip, nor fallen over as a result of such failure.

Advancing age, and failing memory, are a fantastic combination... wink

I have fond memories of my falls when I first started using SPD pedals and completely forgot I was clipped when coming to a stop. It must have been hilarious to watch.

3rd ride ever clipped in. Did 65 miles without a hitch. Fell over sideways as I pulled onto the driveway in front of the house. Too busy mucking around with my Garmin.

Fell over twice more in the first year but never since. Never damaged more than a bit of a scuffed elbow and a bent mech hanger.

My most memorable was many moons ago after recovering from a sprained/twisted ankle.

I was off cycling for about 6 weeks and my ankle was pretty much back to normal - no pain when I walked.

So I went out on my bike and all felt fine until I came to my first set of lights. Went to twist my foot to unclip and a massive pain shot up my leg. At which point my immediate reaction was to stop twisting my foot.

Unfortunately, I'd already started transferring my weight over to that side and it was impossible to stop the inevitable slow-speed fall to the ground - still clipped in.

Luckily there wasn't a car behind me to see it.

These days, I normally unclip as I'm coasting to a stop, rather than waiting until I've almost stopped like then.

Had a few spills when learning when younger.

Almost had another one a week or so ago too. Thought I was unclipped but must have clipped back in whilst resting my foot near. Was able to stop my fall by grabbing a post as I was going over and was able to unclip at the same time. Still hurt a bit for a day or two!

I fell again waiting at a red light in traffic (I don't know why I even bother when other cyclists just whizz past me). Kept my head down, too embarrassed to look at any drivers in case they were having a laugh. Hit the edge of the kerb with my knee but seems okay.

Going to change to multimode SH56s as suggested by bob above.
