It's very easy to bypass the War Memorial in East Lulworth; in fact I'm sure the main road through the village, such as it is, was to all intents and purposes closed for the Act of Remembrance itself when I was there.

On the strength of the last comment, though, I presume no cars will move anywhere in the country during the two minutes on the 13th, because all their drivers are so much more considerate than selfish cyclists and will therefore have pulled over and stopped?

Hold the front page! Group of cyclists are inconsiderate tossers!

NB. Not that individual cyclists are tossers per se, but when a swarm of MAMILs with their beer guts and carbon bikes turn up anywhere the tosser factor goes off the chart. For extra tosser points make sure you queue up individually in a cafe to order your stupid slices of cake one at a time, and pay with a card just to make sure everyone else suffers maximum inconvenience. Yes yes, poor rant, first world problems etc. hehe

PS. There are probably worse groups out there, like ISIS or something, but I don't think I have ever witnessed anything remotely resembling courtesy or politeness by a group of cyclists.

PPS. I am a cyclist, but don't ride in a group.
Do you ride on your own because you don't have any mates?

precisely this. If the road is open to traffic and there's going to be dozens of cars/busses/lorries driving past making much more noise than a few bikes then I'm completely failing to see what the objection is.

Yes, how dare they get the same service as everyone else in the cafe. How would you suggest they order their cake?

It's not clear from the article. Is the Sportive due to go right past the memorial during the service? That seems st to me.

If it's just going within a mile then I guess its a bit of an ott reaction by the nimby

It couldn't be much closer to the road but you're right, there is possible diversion.

I sympathise with his point of view. If a diversion is possible it should be put in place.

Oh well, I guess they can just stay at home and quietly reflect instead or go to the super market, DIY store, garden centre, cinema, pub, get some petrol etc..

Or maybe they could go for a bike ride, and do some quiet reflecting out in the saddle?

Personally, I've found organised Remembrance services too much, and I haven't attended one since I lost the anonymity provided by a uniform and a peaked cap. I get to "reflect" on a daily basis. Cycling saved my sanity after I was retired from the army, but hey? Anyone not marching themselves off to a service and standing still for half an hour or so is a total knobhead, right?

I'm glad the event won't go ahead on this particular Sunday, but it seems a bit daft to have cancelled it altogether. Riders were registered and looking forward to this, after all, so why not postpone it for a week or two. I also think the reaction of those who spoke against it sucks now that it's been canned. They're "pleased" it's been cancelled. I suspect in many cases this was less to do with the Remembrance Sunday date clash, and more to do with it being any cycling event on any particular day of the year. There are some right roasters in that part of the world, and I suspect that Capt Pugwash of the good ship UKIP might well be one of them.

Like I said,I'm glad it won't go ahead on that day, but disappointed to see it gone from the calendar completely. It's NOT a good thing when jumped up little town Councillors are allowed to feel that they've 'achieved' something in getting a cycling event cancelled. Some fools might rejoice, but be careful what you wish for. These local politics types seem to have a long list of targets for banning - your favoured pastime might well be next on their action plan...

...because as many have pointed out already, bicycles, even large groups of bicycles, are ALWAYS far quieter than the reversing alarm on a DHL lorry, as just one example. Has every commercial enterprise in the land been asked to knock it on the head on Sunday 13th November? Will the hard shoulders of our motorways be choc-a-bloc with drivers stood beside their vehicles in "quiet contemplation"? Probably not. Huge chunks of the population will be carrying on 'business as usual' and sad as it may seem, some who share our Sceptred Isle are barely even aware of the history of the Act of Remembrance.
