You walk at almost 5 mph?!?!
I never got beyond half marathon distance but was happy with 1 hour 50. I still say a complete novice would find it VERY hard to run a marathon in 8 weeks. Doing the Etape would be a bit easier, but not massively
OK, a slight km/miles miscalc, but still nearer 4mph. add an hour or so if you like, point still remains, it's all a matter of pace; especially so on a bike, going from flat out to easy is a surprisingly small number of mph.
FWIW I went from nothing (and 20kg overweight) to a half marathon in 2 weeks (and 3 runs) aged 36. Ok, I was in bits for weeks afterwards, but very doable.. A PB pace marathon is still extremely painful, but back off to comfortable and it's just a long training session, like a century ride, it's just another distance, there are longer.

It's no harder than going zero to a marathon distance run in 8 weeks
I have to take issue with that! I can't imagine anyone who hasn't run being able to do a marathon. No way, nothing to over 4 hours running? Every time I stop and then start again it takes me a month to get up to 5 miles.
Cycling is low impact if your arse can tolerate the seat for a full day in the saddle provided you have some fitness a hundred miles is doable with negligible training.

Try that with running and you will properly injure yourself.

Running and cycling have many parallels, especially when you get to things like marathons and longer sportives, but the differences are enough to make the comparison for the purposes of this TV show a little pointless.

Running is high impact, but descending off Alps can be very dangerous. Can we all agree that going from zero to Marathon and going from zero to Etape Du Tour are both pretty difficult, but with different challenges?

I saw the 2nd episode last night, and quite enjoyed it. Some personal opinions:

  • Well done to Angelica for finishing the Surrey sportive. If all the twaddle about never being on a bike is true, this is quite an achievement.
  • I've done a long ride round the Surrey Hills, and been to Box Hill a few times. It's not the hardest sportive in the country, but for the level they were at, it's challenging enough.
  • That Dallaglio ride looks like a rugby tour on bikes, and the scenery was gorgeous.
  • Some of the pros / presenters have nice kit and bikes.
  • Amy = lick

Just for you Louie....

I'll just say I put the pedal down to keep with her after the first feed station on the Bostin Peaks, until the first proper hill then I lost track and I was left....

I managed 10 mins of the second programme. When the female couldn't ride down the road I turned it off!

For me there was a big differential between the guys whingeing their way around a sportive in Surrey and (mostly) giving up when it got a bit difficult, and the three in the Pyrenees who smashed a load of climbing and overcame some significant challenges (hangover, too many pies etc). For Darren Gough to recover from his bonk and finish, with a smile on his face too, was pretty impressive.

Yes Darren Gough must be a lot fitter than he looks. He was shifting a lot of excess weight up those climbs!

Judging by next week's preview he'll perhaps be curbing his exuberance a tad.

I haven't seen any of it (yet?) but the Mirror online TV reviewer certainly doesn't like it...

http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/tour-de-celeb-s...

...the show has bypassed me, even with seeing this thread, simply because I don't watch a lot of telly, and I have to confess I forgot to set a series link to record it.

I'm getting fed up of the constant revisiting of what each of the characters did 5 minutes/1 hour/7 days ago. We don't all have the memory of a goldfish! And if I see one more of them have a slow speed off...

Absolutely loving Austin Healey's totally straight-faced pieces to camera. Him, Darren Gough and Jodie Kidd are coming off very well imo.

I would be interested to see how quick he could do that sportive if he actually didn't have to wait around for the deadwood (austin I mean)

It's a pretty hilly course but he looks like he could make up some time on the descents and flat. Fastest time (on Strava) this year was just over 5 hours:

Me and couple of lads from the club did the long route - pretty tough route, with a strong headwind for much of it.
