Rode in this morning, and was really looking forward to taking the long way home this afternoon, as it has been a while since I've been out on the trails. However on the first climb away from my house I noticed some crunching noises from the drivetrain, then the pedals started to get very wobbly - the bottom bracket has bitten the dust. Fortunately I have got a spare at home, so may be able to sneak in a short ride this afternoon after I have replaced it.

Back in December I said:
...
The one thing I've noticed by its absence on the commute to/from work is the complete lack of greetings from fellow riders. Almost every single person I meet on a normal ride will give a hearty (or if on a hill, a grunted) "Morning!" or similar. But on the commute, in either direction, it's nada. Not a single tiny sausage in the last 2 months.
And so that continued through the icy darkness of winter.

But this morning: Success! I received a merrily bellowed "Good morning!" from a similarly rucksacked commuter as we both crested a hill in opposite directions. About bleedin' time.

Small wins eh? biggrin

Cobalt sky, aluminium bike, steely determination and legs of lead...

This week can only improve on the cycling front...

fking bd headwind st.

And now it's raining, so I'm likely to get soaked on the way home. Not the best day.

Winter gear came out again this morning... I had prematurely packed it away it seems.

Ha yes, the same here. Leggings still drying on a radiator at work. A miserable cold ride in the rain!

My last Friday commute today, for the forseeable future at least.

1st day not commuting on the bike for a while today. A niggling sore wrist since my skiing holiday a couple of weeks ago turns out to be a broken arm! I've been riding daily until now and done about 120 miles on it. In plaster until it heals.
irked
Oh dear, speedy recovery!
Just been to see the docs, was hoping my broken wrist would be sufficiently healed to be back on the bike next week, but I'm told I have to wait another 4 weeks. I miss it very badly!

I've changed my name back to what it was before

ETA: name change doesn't seem to have taken effect. I will be posting as idiotgap again when I can work it out

I drove into work today for the first time in quite a while, I stuck to the speed limit on every road i used & i reckon i was overtaken by at least a dozen cars on my 6 mile journey.

I never saw one cyclist go through a red light though.

1 van going through a red light today and three idiots making stupid overtakes. One forced the car coming the other way to brake, one was VERY lucky nothing was coming the other way as they spent 10 seconds overtaking me on a downhill left bend, coming in to a blind right bend and finally an idiot that forced me to slam my brakes on as they swerved in to me as there was a van that came round the next downhill blind corner they overtook me on.

I know you're meant to replace the chain and cassette together, but I've only done about 1,000 miles on my Brompton before the chain failed, so I thought I'd get away with it.

Nope. (Although only the small cog is slipping, so I'll get back OK tonight.)

Grrr... Stupid me.

You wore a cassette out in 1000miles? Have you heard of chain lube?

I usually get a cassette on my commuter to last about 5000miles and through 2-3 chains.

Just one of the cogs on a Brompton...

[Insert joke about lube]

After 20 odd years I finally work close enough to home to ride in every day. I start with a mile or so through town to warm up then into Ringwood forest to Verwood. I've cycled almost every day since the clocks changed and haven't taken the same route twice. I get the choice of open gravel road to single track through the trees and everything in between. I can't believe how much I enjoy going to work now and giving my ancient Kona some exercise.

Back on the MTB this week, after a couple of fast and fun weeks on the roadie. Because I broke the roadie. frown

Loving the weather though, it can't last until the end of September now, can it?

Back on a bike today after the skiing-wrist-break couple of months off. Super weather and a lovely ride in really. I've moved offices during the time off so new routes to work on, not too drastic a change though (St. Pauls to Liverpool St.), so the route changes are just details.
