Can anyone recommend suitable road tyres for my 29er MTB currently running 2.25" Maxxis Ardents? I'm using it as my winter bike right now (just bought a lovely Orbea Avant road bike but it's far too nice to be riding at this time of year) and would like to do some longer on-road rides as well as getting muddy!

Budget would be £50ish for the pair and I'd like them to be as puncture resistant as possible. Many thanks smile

Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres would be ideal for you.
They're a bit heavy but as close to puncture-proof as you'll get and they roll reasonably well on the roads.

Schwalbe marathon plus is the correct answer.

I've got specialized crossroads on my hybrid, they are flak jacket ones so puncture protection on the tread but not the side walls. Armadillos are the full armor ones.

They have been great, never had a puncture, done quite a few miles on them, the coast to coast twice and a few three day tours.

They were only about £15 each but that was about 4 years ago, I think they have just updated the tread pattern recently.

With 4 years daily winter riding experience with them I can confirm that this is the correct answer

Only if you don't encounter snow/slush, IMO. The MP is a touring tire better suited to milder weather. For a winter all-rounder on an MTB, the Smart Sam is probably better.

I won't go out in the snow so looks like Schwalbe Marathon Plus is the answer.

Two questions, is this the tyre tread pattern you all mean?

And would 700x32 or 700x35 be the better size for my 29er wheels?

I've been running Continental Contact 2's on my previous 26er and current 29er for seven years and many thousand miles of commiting. Zero puctures.

Gatorskins are another option, in 32c or 35c. I have them on my commuter at the moment, and they roll much better than the standard Marathons I had on there before. No punctures on the gatorskins, and only had one on the marathons (but that was due to a screw hitting dead centre when they were almost totally worn out, so not a deficiency of the tyre).

they're the ones.

i run 32's in the winter on my bike for 90% road and 10% bridle paths. if you are going to do more bridle i would probably opt for 35's although in truth you'll be fine with either. 35's might look slightly more in keeping with the bike as they are slightly wider. i'd probably go 35's.

Big thanks to everyone who recommended the 700c x 35 SMPs beer

Had a great ride out today, a nice 70/30 mixture of road/bridleways and they were superb, fast but still grippy and confidence inspiring in the wet and muddy conditions. Excuse the terrible photo but they do look slightly odd on the bike after taking off the 2.25 Maxxis jobs laugh

I know this is a bit late but I've fitted Scwalbe Marathon Mondial evos. Similar puncture resistance to the marathons but half the weight being folding tyres. I struggled to get them in this country but Rose had them delivered in 3 days.

Worst "I need a road bike as well as my MTB but too scared of lycra/wife won't let me" thread ever- full of actual good consumer advice and meaningful help... what is PH coming to?

Wrong on both counts I'm afraid! I've got a rather lovely Orbea Avant M30d road bike but the roads around Wiltshire and West Oxfordshire are so cacked in ste at this time of year though, there's no way I'm riding it until the weather picks up!

I can back that up, living in Wilts and riding in Oxfordshire, a couple of weekend rides recently have destroyed the bearings in winter road bike!

The muc on the road round here is unreal when it stays damp for a few weeks
