Just speccing up my new bike and tossing up between Ultegra or Ultegra Di2 for an additional £700.

Is the Di2 worth the £700 premium?

Or if I'm goun premium shodu I pay £900 to go from Ultegra to Dura Ace?

Had the same dilemma, Ultegra £480 or Ultegra Di2 £980, or DA for at the time £1200 ish from memory.

I went Di2 Ultegra and don't regret it one bit. DA would have been nice but I ride the bike in all weather and couldn't justify it (mechanical or Di2 DA).

Ultegra Groupsets are around £500 retail, Ultegra Di2 Groupsets are around £900 retail.

I would have thought that there is a good angle there for "suggesting" you would like Di2 at a premium of £350 - £400 tops, £700 seems a bit like profiteering. (I all other things are equal.)

(Never ridden it, but will hopefully try before speccing it for my next proper bike.)

Still to have the haggle on the cost but looks like Ultegra Di2 it will be.

Now wheels; Mavic Ksyrium sls or mavic carbone sls?

Currently i'm using the ksyriums and have for the past 10 years and they've been faultless but which are better?

You know it's the catrbones!

Reasons:
Carbon
Wooshy sound
blingy look
will wet a gusset at 50 paces.

Some good deals on the Ksyrium Pro Exalith at the moment - in fact quite a few models - 30%+ off. Since I got mine I hardly used them - put the older Elite's back on for winter. Just when the Exalith should come into its own.

On groupset - I would stick at Ultegra level - replacement parts just get more costly down the line (and I'm just replacing lots of my Ultegra components which costs enough) - Ultegra offers the optimum in my opinion - but having not ridden with Di2 I can't say if its worth the extra. That said - those who have it all swear by it.

You guys like your factory wheel sets, do you just chuck them when the rims wear out?

I would be worried with having to rebuild them and new spokes for the whole wheel (what Mavic recommend) if you get even a single broken spoke.

Having said that, those new treated rims do break pretty well. Shame they don't do a tubeless rims.

I've just got Di2 installed on my summer bike, so have only ridden it once but loved it, even in gloves it was a delight to change gear and no chain rub to worry about.

Expensive when you upgrade a disc braked bike but worth it !

Yes. Don't even spend another moment debating it.

Are you going to build this yourself or get a shop to do it?

Going to the Manufacturers directly for a bespoke carbon frame then adding components to my spec.

Part of the reason I stuck the original Elites back on for winter is due to the ''wear'' sustained last winter. Having hit more than my fair share of potholes filled with water I recently had them in at my LBS for a quick check whilst they were doing something else for me. Turns out a number of the spokes are now pretty unadjustable due to the the alloy corroding together.
Hence - the Elite's have become the everyday / winter wheel and I will use the new Exalith's for better weather. As you suggest - the only effective remedy for the Elite's is a total rebuild - and they weren't that bad - just aiming for factory fresh true levels.

If I had gone the other way and saved the Elite's - think I would have gone for some Zonda's - a much discussed topic in other threads.

Di2 a definite yes. I have it on 2 road bikes, and a cyclocross bike, and its faultless. Battery life is several thousand kms, shifting is perfect, simple on the fly trimming of rear derailleur (not that you hardly need to)....I cant see any negatives. Whenever I ride a mechanically geared bike, it feels like step backwards..!

I have Mavic Ksyrium disc wheels too - love them

Winter wheels go for Fulcrum 7's and lob them. Otherwise discs.....

In case you need more persuading - get Di2, it's brilliant. I wouldn't buy another road bike without it or something very like it now, although as others have said a £700 premium over normal Ultegra does seem rather steep.
