Disappinting bike parking

I have a meeting to attend next week at a fairly sizeable convention centre.

Ive just phoned to ask about bike storage facilities and lucky me, they have a post behind the building I can lock it up to
Whoopee - no cage, no shed, no CCTV, no bloody nothing just a bit of room away from the main thoroughfare

With a degree of irony this place was also on the main Tour de France route in 2014 and made a fairly large noise about it

Bring it in and lock it to reception? When our bike shed was re purposed as a smoking shelter i started keeping my bike in reception. Lasted about 3 weeks before we got a new secure bike shed!

I dont think ive ever seen any bike parking outside of large cities

I chickened out and took the car

Close examination revealed two of those metal bar things to lean your bike against and lock it to
Better than nothing however way off the main thoroughfare and not in plain sight of reception
Worse still the place has no boundary wall and backs on to the canal towpath for a potential quick getaway

Taking it inside was not an option

Grrrr - its the Tour de France thing which annoys me the most
