walk into your branch and explain what happened. I have had transactions reversed which were in error - they contact sellers bank and talk to them directly.

Police can get involved after that if the bank route doesn't work

they normally see it as a civil matter. he has willfully paid money into someone's account. duedil and all that springs to mind. hope you get it sorted though. maybe in future, ask if anyone can look at it for you first ( PH members always cover the country ). this one ( if actually located in Wigan ) is only 5-6 miles from me and I could have give it the once over, gratis, before purchase.

This is true, but in my case the bank seemed very willing to help and pass on details - it was along the line that they couldn't tell me where the guy lived, but they could inform the police, and then you go through the courts.

I got refunded before this point so not sure how it would have panned out.

Quote removed as requested.

And if I screen shotted that along with said account number and sort code you'd have got your "personal banker" into hot water.

If what you say is true, then as a customer that practice is totally unacceptable.

Andy, completely agree. I am sure it isn't normal practice.

Good reminder of what to and what not to post.

I sympathise with the OP.
For anyone buying a bike (or I guess anything else) one forum I use said similar to this...
Ask the seller to send a photo of something they're unlikely to do without the bike eg "please send a photo of the rear mech region of the bike with a banana, tomato or potato beside the rear mech" Seems like a simple way of ensuring the seller actually has the bike, but of course doesn't prove he's not a scammer. A step in the right direction though.

I agree, a lot of forums will make you write your forum name on paper to take with the picture when selling, which is a good idea. Also asking to speak to them on their landline (I suppose they could try and use a phonebox though).

Hindsight is a bd and doesn't help op though. Good luck on getting the money back.

So I've just ticked a box that said I won't do any internet sleuthing....

...but you have a name and an area of the country, it's not rocket science finding this guy.

This point has already been addressed.

I opened my first bank account in South Wales. I swapped to a new branch in the '90s, same bank. That actually cost me in charges for declined Direct Debits, so I didn't bother to shift my account to a local branch after that. To be honest, there's no need to with banks these days. Long gone are the days of only being able to 'cash' a cheque at YOUR local branch.

So my sort code is for a branch in Wiltshire, but I've had addresses as far away as North Yorkshire and Essex.

Any other suggestions on actions to take.

Banks (on both sides) informed
Police informed...

Passed on details of the fraud to 'buster jack' to help prevent future fraud hopefully.

I'd like to break his legs, but of course I'd get arrested for that.
