My son ordered a bike from Canyon in September or October 2015. We think it was delivered in about December 2015. He has just received an email purporting to be from Canyon demanding payment for the bike. He genuinely believed he had paid for it. We are not sure he would have paid with his bank card or we, his parents, would have paid by credit card and been refunded by him. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a scam?

We will be checking old bank and credit card statements later!

Give Canyon UK a call and ask them??

Service Centre UK:
Monday to Friday 10.00am – 5.00pm
Phone: +44 208 5496001
uk@canyon.com

If it isn't a scam, I'd be fascinated to know why they sent your son a bike he hadn't paid for over a year ago, and have only just thought to ask for some money now!!!

You're not the only one it seems, Canyon's euro style invoicing is a pain in the arse.

Had the same thing when I bought some POC glasses from them.

Queried it with my card issuer who said Canyon had been set all the correct info and it was Canyon who had not completed the transaction their end. All sorted itself in the end with a couple of emails and livechat to UK HQ.

Check your account/card and query if necessary.

You're not alone (as per link above).

I wish I was lucky enough to a) have someone ship me a brand new bike and forgot to charge me for it b) be wealthy enough to not notice.

I suspect a lot of people knew dam well they hadn't paid for their new bikes and have been waiting with their fingers crossed they'd never be asked for it.

I received an email from Canyon also about payment last week regarding a chain guide replacement circa £20 didn't even realise the transaction hadn't been completed. Emailed Canyon separately just referencing customer number and they confirmed that payment was outstanding and confirmed the order and date it was placed.

It was a genuine surprise to us. Having investigated it would appear we have not been charged. I am very surprised at the lack of financial control at Canyon and the time taken to discover the problem.

Appears this all happened whilst migrating to their new system. So, lost orders, massive delays on deliveries and now retrospective charging from 12 months ago. Canyons debtor days must have looked really rather poor. Saying that they must not have even logged the invoices to the sales ledger if they are only chasing now. All sounds very amateurish.

Many card transaction systems implemented by retailers both online and card present use a 2 part system of an authorisation at time of sale by real time communication to their acquirer which reserves funds followed by sending an overnight settlement file.

Settlement files may be one per point of sale terminal or consolidated over the whole business. Typical problems occur if there are network comms problems at the time of the collection or transmission of the file.

Eventually someone in the accounts department does a reconciliation and realises that the charges have not gone through.

Within a time limit of a few weeks the retailer can just push the transaction through which could be surprise if you thought that the charge had gone though your bank weeks earlier.

I don't mean this in a nasty way, but in similar vein, I am surprised none of you realised a considerable sum had not left your bank account or appeared on a CC statement.

Yup, here in the UK Barclays have the biggest window I know if at 6 months, without involvement by them, after that, they have to interviene.

This time of year is dreaded by my support team, as its year end and we get loads of calls where people finally reconcile thir books and notice they haven't been paid. In the past its led to some quite uncomfortable conversations. My personal worst, is a company that finally noticed that they hadn't been paid for 12 months, becuase they had left the authorization route open, but shut the ftp comms down for the end of day process (ripped out the telephone line).

Has anyone tried paying yet? It appears you can't pay over the internet or phone the only option is an international payment. Nationwide want £20 fee to send the £20 i paid for the chain guide!

Any ideas?

I check my statements for payments which HAVE been collected. If someone HADN'T collected, I'd probably not notice.
Any funds which remain after a given point in the month get shifted to a savings account.
I'm not surprised in the slightest that somebody could miss this.
