Wilier Triestena is a brand not a model. Also Wilier represent poor value for money compared to other brands.

Cut and paste error on my behalf, GTR SL.

£1800 with Ultegra is not bad, no worse than most other main stream brands.

Giant Propel Advanced SL 2 (I'm not quite so keen on this years colours)

Canyon Aeroad CF SLX Disc8

Pankhurst will do their best to get you on an Orro bike. I went there yesterday, and in contrast to my last visit in 2015 I was very much given the hard sell on a bike I didn't want or need.

I was in there today and successfully bought a chain and had a test ride of a saddle without being pressured into anything... I doubt they'd have been trying to sell you a bike if you hadn't suggested in some way you might be interested in buying a bike.

I think you need to research frame geometry and read up on what would best suit you. People posting pictures of stiff Aero bikes designed for sprinters may look cool but they may not be ideal for you given the shorter head tubes and longer top tubes.

Personally for that sort of money I'd be looking at a high end steel frame or titanium. Something from Condor, dura ace c24 wheels and ultegra would be a joy to ride

Well given that you're in Reading anyway you should invest £75 in a new bike consultation at The Bike Whisperer in Newbury.

This will give you your answer.

Are a sprinter in the pro peleton or do you just want to look like one? Can't see why anyone would buy any of the above without meeting that criteria.

Of course people are free to spend their money as they wish, but imagine the shame of being spat out the back in your local wobbly wheelers sportive on that propel thing.

i rather like that giant, but you would need to be fairly decent rider to not look like a bell end.

the amount of fatties at richmond park on 5 grand bikes amuses me.

Very good shout this

If no the BW I would only spend that much in conjunction with a bike fit, or if I knew exactly what I wanted/was doing

You would be hard pushed to get a "bad" bike for that much, but its very easy to get an amazing bike that doesn't fit you well, or isn't really suitable to your riding and body proportions

From what I can see, your requirements are:

  • £2.5 - £3.5k
  • Not disc brakes
  • Shimano groupset
  • Carbon frame (implied)
Is this about right? There's plenty of options!

What sort of riding are you wanting to take part in? Racing, Sportives, etc...? Which would you prioritise out of comfort, weight and aero?

How flexible are you? Do you have any other special requirements?

Well I am 43 so no spring chicken , but normally go out on my own do between 50 and 70 km if I have the time , I will do some sportive rides with mates through the summer , and maybe this year try a time trial . I tried out the trek emonda again in H2 fit and the geometry seemed bang on , so I think I am gonna go for it , good chunk of money of as well , as it's a 2016 bike

I have a Trek with H2 geo, but an Alu one from a few years ago. It's a good fit for me, and I'd definitely consider another but in Carbon when I scrape the funds together.

I've done Lands End to John O'Groats in 9 days, hideously hilly sportives and even clipped some TT bars one for a few local events. So it should be able to serve all your needs!

Good luck!

Or being overtaken on a Sunday morning ride.

As I probably said earlier in the thread, I don't think you'll go too far wrong with an Émonda (so long as it fits you). When I bought mine it wasn't even on the list of bikes to look at, but I was pushed to try a test ride by Matt at Pedal On (but not a "hard sell" by any stretch). The geometry and fit just worked for me, where other bikes (including Cervelo and Storck, sadly) had not. I had to come to terms with not owning a bike I'd set my heart on, but as a result the best advice I can give to anyone buying a new bike now is "keep an open mind, and FFS buy a bike that does indeed fit you!!!

It's bad enough being slow up hills on an Émonda!!!

But I don't really care what anyone thinks of me and my choice of bike to be honest. I've passed slower riders on far more expensive bikes, and been passed by faster riders on entry level stuff. At the end of the day your pace and ability is defined far more by the person riding the bike, than the bike itself. I'm certainly not at the point where 'marginal gains' due to bike features can make more difference to my times than losing a few kg and actually structuring my training would... wink
