^^^ What he said, all makes more sense now. Enjoy.
Two days in and I'm loving it! The reduced weight makes it feel like a different bike and the improved ratios have combined to bring my cruising speed up and tonight I not only PB'd a short Strava segment but made it into the all time top ten! smile

The only thing I have noticed is that the narrower wheel and tyre has highlighted something that I hadn't noticed until now - the accident that bent my first front wheel has skewed the forks! It looks square from the front and the wheel is square in the forks but looking down over the stem I can now see that the wheel is leant over a few degrees frown - Guess what I'll be buying next month...

I once tried denying/defending the 'triggers broom' remarks from family and friends... now I realise that this is the cycling way! (I have looked at carbon forks but really don't want to spend that sort of money!)

I'd rather have a slipped disc than have it looking like Dizieeeeee De Rosa with unlevel saddle and 4cm of spacers wink

But yeh for my height I have pretty short legs so it always looks like I'll be properly stretched out but it works ok. That said I've not ridden it outside yet and I have a 90 mile race on it this Sunday!

Not nearly as shiny, nor anywhere close to as new as some on here, but...

I dragged this out of the garage this week. 1997 Falcon Pro-Line, 14 speed, 53/39 x 13-23 Shimano Exage 300 gearing. All original bar the brake pads and tyres.

After a few judicious tweaks, some cunning recycling, and sly upgrades, it now looks like this...

...Ultegra 6700 brakes, recycled cables, bar tape and saddle, plus Garmin mount, speed/cadence sensor, second-hand SPD pedals (thanks, richardxjr beer ), plus a new threaded headset (£35 including fitting and getting the front wheel properly trued) and a cheap Aldi/Lidl (I forget which) saddle bag.

First ride yesterday was meant to be a short 'shakedown' ride, but I stayed out for 25 miles and really enjoyed myself. I avoided any really testing hills, as I haven't ridden at all for over four full weeks, and I didn't fancy walking up anything steep (the original gearing has been retained, lowest gear is 39 x 23 eek )

Currently on 700 x 23c Continental Gatorskins, but they were only chucked on there (a few years ago) because I hated them on my modern road bike. They'll be getting replaced by something rather more voluminous pretty soon, as I intend to use this for gravel fire roads, byways and tow paths primarily.

39 x 23? You old pro you. biggrin

Conti 4seasons get my vote. Awesome all rounder.

I was going to swap the part-worn (700 x 25c) 4Seasons from my crashed Merida across to this bike, but close inspection reveals that being shunted sideways by a Mercedes Vito has torn the sidewalls, so they are fit only for the bin. While it's dry I'll risk the Gators, but I'm either going to buy some (28c) 4Seasons, or swap some even larger (38c) Schwalbe Marathons from the wife's defunct commute bike onto it for the short/medium term.

My new bike is here now, too...

...Trek Emonda SL 6. It has a far more civilised 34 x 28 lowest gear, and probably weighs about half as much as the Falcon. It'll definitely be my 'climbing' bike. wink

Might be worth getting some heli tape for the head tube to prevent those cables rubbing, I've used biketart tape before which is good and some paragon tape which was ok. Wasn't prepared to pay for the 3M stuff but apparently it's the best.

The heli tape is definitely a good idea.
If you want some, mail me and I'll post you a bit of 3M stuff to do the heradtube with.

neenaw, Dizeee, thanks guys!

I'm beginning to feel like a bit of a charity basket case on here. Just an hour ago I was contemplating sticking the 'Trek' logo'd frame protection on, but they're very small, and having a bunch of them all over the tube would look pretty dire. When Mother's Day is out of the way, I'll contact you to sort something out. I really do appreciate the offers, both of them.

As for hooking up again, yes, Dizeee, more than happy to do that. I've not got a serviceable MTB right now, so it'd have to be the road bike, and you would definitely have to promise to ditch about 5mph and go easy on me, though!!!

I've got to get back into some kind of routine with cycling again. The old Falcon to start with, probably, as it'll be harder work and therefore better training, no? Plus I need to build a bit more confidence around traffic before I risk using the fancy plastic bike 'in anger'.

My only regret right now is not getting the Falcon sorted sooner, because if I had, there'd not be the recent month long gap in my riding. The sad thing is that the replacement headset was only £35, and the rest of the parts have been lying around the garage for over a year. I'm going to have to source the parts to fix the MTB now, and then the broken frames in the garage will get stripped down and slung in a skip.

I was going to sign up for the "Tour of Cambridgeshire" after seeing the thread about it, but my brother has decided to get married that weekend, so that's out of the question. I must sign up for an event of some kind, it's just a case of identifying one I want to do, and making sure I'm free for it. The closed roads nature of the TdC was very appealing, but there don't seem to be too many sportives with closed roads. First things first, though, I need to start riding regularly again, then move on in sensible steps from there...
