Hi all, inspired by the Kuwahara ET rebuild on here a while ago I have just bought a Mk1 Raleigh Burner F&F which in time will be a full restoration and rebuild.

Gulp.

Best get yourself over to radbmx.co.uk for all those parts you will need.

Doing the same with an extra burner, erm raleighburner.com and burnerworld.co.uk are good sources for parts and services but steer well clear of the other sections, indeed you have to be a paid member of Burnerworld if you want some good repro decals & pads.

I'm trying desperately hard to avoid looking at any Skyway TA frame/forks on Ebay, else I just know I'd be several hundred quid lighter.

Extra Burner... Hmmm. I'm literally starting with a red frame and black forks, that's all I've got.

Always liked Extra Burners because deep down I always wanted an ET, should I go that route???

Regards the TA a mate has a mint, original white TA in his folks' garage where it's been since about 1986.

Oh and I deeply regret selling my GT for £30 all those years ago now as well.

I had an extra when I was about 8 so it's that or nothing, there's a powder-coater on burnerworld FHMreader who can do the scheme down to a tea for about £70 including stripping, blasting and sending back, I've tried a couple tests on some tubing and got no where near the level of finish I want, always end up with a splatter on the white.

I've had a couple of bits rechromed by Buttsbikeshop on the Raleigh & Rad BMX forums and they came back amazing.

Incidentally the Frame & forks cost me £20 if that, and I'm now running at £250, still got to get some tuff II's, tyre & tubes, chain, tensioners, pads & decals.

Im so sorry....

I motivated you in to long hours with paint stripper burning your fingers, hours on ebay hunting bits, spending loads on stuff that was a quarter of the price when we bought it first time round, but its certainally worth it biggrin I'm currently working on a Mk2 Chopper, full build thread to follow in a couple of weeks, heres a teaser though, from this:

Good luck with it mate & take plenty of pics before you do anything, during it & after

Its addictive biggrin

If I did a Burner build I'd go with a classic Tuff Burner. Blue frame, black forks, yellow skyways, absolute classic looking bike. Or maybe a black ultra burner... cool

It was you was it?

Grr.

I'll post some pictures up soon, I was planning on doing it during the Christmas break but the reality of finding the required bits has hit home in a big way... It's going to take forever.

Update

This is taking a lot longer than anticipated, I'm slowly but surely getting original parts together.
On Saturday I decided to build up what I've got so far, all in unrestored state as you can see from the pics.

I need to find some black rat trap pedals, tyres and a chain.

I've not got the right Viscount grips but doubt I'll ever find them, likewise snake belly tyres seem impossible but I think I'm going to pick up some Comp 3s this week (2.125 + 1.75 for those who know their Burners).

I'm almost certainly going to go the Extra Burner route with regards to colour.

More to come....

Fantastic, We can compare when I'm done on my extra, I'm not going totally original though, still debating whether to go with the original once piece crank, I have a tioga sealed BB and a nearly perfect chrome chainwheel guard, and then just junk that and go with a redline flight 3pc, oh and I'm going with some white Tuff II's. Have gone for chromed weinmann brakes as I never liked the gold finishing originally.

A few before and after pics of the wheels.

A bit of pitting present but I call that "character" smile

I've got everything I need for the Burner now - including a nice shiny set of flanged wheel nuts.

What a transformation! I'm currently sourcing all the bits for a Mk2 rebuild, I've got a Chromo Main Tube frame so it's going to be an Andy Ruffell Team Special, built largely to period catalogue spec.
