I am a pretty dedicated road cyclist, covering anything from 150-220 miles a week, but currently I am ill, and am blocked up like never before! My last "training session" was last Thurday evening. I managed half hour last Friday amd a further 40 mins yesterday, and I am going crazy! I wanna ride the club run tomorrow, but am worried it will set me back.

What would you do? My nose is blocked, and the stuff in my nose is pretty green rather than clear.

Advice please.

As above, REST! One of the hardest things any (semi-)serious athlete has to learn is that there are times when they have to accept they need to rest, to recover from an illness, injury or to consolidate a big block of training. I say this as someone who used to run 100-120 miles a week and used to get very frustrated with time off even when my coach specifically puts it in the schedule.

I'm slowly building up the mileage again after 18 months struggling to return from an injury, now on a reliable 45 per week or so.

Rest for a week. With that sort of mileage background, a week off the bike will probably do you more good than trying to ride even with a light sniffle, especially at this time of year.

When you think you're ready, try a short turbo session. Then if you're not fit enough, you just step off the bike and into the shower and not have to struggle 20miles back home in the rain. (and then spend anoter 2 weeks coughing and spluttering)

I'm a roadie as well and do about the same mileage as you. As has been said already take a rest, a week off the bike won't do any harm, especially not this time of year when the racing is finished and the pace is steady.

The main problems start if you ignore your body and keep trying to train, this normally ends in a trip to the doctor and being ordered to take a month off, sometimes we are our own worst enemies!

Same mileage here (320km a week). If it's above the neck, I don't stop. If it's below the neck and I have a temperature, then I know I should stop, and if I can't hide it from my missus, I'll probably rest.

FWIW, last time I had a chest infection, even on the second dose of antibiotics, my peak flow was barely affected and my average speed didn't suffer. Indeed, following the course of steroids I was prescribed, I PB'd my commute the week after the infection cleared.

Got a streaming cold at the minute. Ran 16km this morning, planning on riding 100km tomorrow.
