Ive just bought another bike which has xtr spd pedals. Will my cleats that i use on my eggbeater type pedals fit them? or do i need new cleats/shoes?

cheers

New cleats should be all you need, you may find the tread pattern spoils on the pedal a bit too much but that is all.

I know that some cleats are interchangeable but the Crank Brothers and Shimano ones look totally different so I would guess no.

sorry just to clarify, im keeping the old bike too. So ideally would my one set of cleats already fitted to the shoes fit the new pedals or do i need to swap cleats everytime i want to use each bike?

Based on the shape of the cleats I don't think you will be able to use one set for both sets of pedals.

Sell the XTR SPDs and buy another set of Crank Bros pedals (if that's what you have on your original bike) to put on the new bike - you don't want to keep swapping cleats each time you swap bikes!

i did consider this but the bike ive bought is quite rare and dont really want to change its spec. So guess i could buy another set of shoes/cleats or change my stumpy to xtr pedals instead of the crank bro's.

You might know the bike, its the MBUK zaskar from the 20th anniversary edt

Just buy some 520s for your current bike. They come with SPD cleats and cost approx £20.

The egg beaters cleats will not fit the SPD's from shimano as the crank brothers cleats are too short.

Changing cleats is a two minute job so entirely up to you.

Is this the bike you've just bought? http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/734864/

If it is then according to the ad the XTR pedals were fitted by the previous owner and not MBUK so I wouldn't worry about replacing them with Eggbeaters. It won't make a difference to the resale value of the bike.

yes thats the bike. Good find my friend. I thought they had been fitted at mbuk but obviuos;y not. Seems a shame to swap them now though as they are a expensive pedal.

They will feel the same just be slightly heavier. I would not want to swap cleats though, may be a quick job to change them, but setting them up so the feel good takes longer. I would either buy a second pair of shoes, or just buy another set of egg beaters and keep the XTR peddles if you want to be able to put the bike back to its original look.

Nice bike by the way.

Cheers mate. The bike is stunning. I'll try to take some pics soon.

Is there any difference in feel between eggbeater and spd's?

My local bike shop reckons spd are loads better.

It is personal preference. I find XTR pedals a joy but an riding swears by his egg beaters.

I have XTRs, my mate has 520s. XTR are lovely with a nice click as you lock in but are no way 4 times better.

Halfrauds are doing a deal on M540 spds at £35. Ive got £25 worth of vouchers to use anyway, so they'll effectively only cost a tenner.

These are ok pedals i assume?

They'll cover quite a few miles as they will be going on my stumpy which is my main bike.

I assume the cleats that these use are the same needed for M979 ?

540s are XT pedals and very nice, a bit lighter than 520s and, like all Shimano SPD pedals, virtually unbreakable.

Pretty much all the shimano pedals are bombproof, I've got 520s on all my bikes, some sets are over five years old and work beautifully. 540s are a tiny bit lighter but if you've got the vouchers you may as well go for them.

It's the same cleat accross all the shimano SPDs, SPD-Rs are different but they're for roadies and have a massive plastic cleat.

Get the 540s, they'll do you fine.
