Hyper-Clean (engine degreaser) or White Spirit or Diesel.

Isopropyl Alcohol is also very good at cleaning parts.

I'm currently using Halfraud's own bike cleaner. I recently started using a dry lube, as I find I end up with less crud sticking to the chain - especially bad if I go to the Dark Peak.

Diesel works for me on bearings etc. Not too aggressive and leaves an oily residue.

Rather than diesel I'm using petrol as I didn't want the residue left behind, as mentioned above. Great for degreasing new chains: I use a water-based lube system (a Scottoiler) and it works best starting with completely grease/oil-free chains.

I've also got some Pedro's eco-friendly degreaser stuff for more delicate jobs if I'm working on bits still attached to the bike. Other than that it's undiluted Fenwicks cleaner stuff.

If you can find a car paint suppliers locally get a 5l can of cellulose thinners - cheapest they have will be perfect for degreasing parts. Keep it off your paint, though - it`ll be down to a bare frame.

Baby wipes are great. You would not believe how they tear through grease. And don't knacker your hands quite so much.
