I'll be sending in an application to see if I can get a place on this. Looks like a cracking days cycling.

Does look good. A mate did the route this year, Hardknot is a monster if you've not done it before - hits 33% from memory at some points.

Only one of the 3 lads made it to the top without walking / falling off clipped in: and all were fit lads (iron man etc). Lad who got to the top put it down to riding a compact chain set & pure bloody mindedness.

I'd love to do that, just to say I'd done it...

I might need to lose about 20kg of weight before though, otherwise I'd really struggle with all those hills...

assuming we can get tickets, me and my 3 mates are going to do this..

I like a challenge.

ETA: I would be pleased to see all the triple chainset snobs try this ride on their double. I'll be there with my triple...

I did this yesterday in the p1ssing rain. Let me tell you, it is probably the hardest thing you will do on 2 wheels. I heard one bloke praying when he was going up hard knott. It was utter lunacy.

It doesn't look that bad. wink

Did many get up there on a double chainset? The hardest climb I've done on a double is Bushcombe Lane in The Cotswolds but it's just a baby in comparison to anything in't north. It was still bloody hard though.

The trouble with triple chainsets is all the double chainset boys walking faster than you. wink

funnily enough, despite what I said, I actually used my new carbon boardman bike with a compact, and it wasnt too bad overall. one of the guys we started out with dropped out at about 50 miles as it was too much for him.

the other issue being that you have done nearly 100 miles when you get to hard knott.

Most compacts get pretty close to the lowest gear of a triple. A trad double is a different matter though...

I by complete accident went past some of these heroes yesterday! The wife and I had arranged to meet her sister and husband at the center at Whinlatter and I was in awe at firstly how many riders there was. Secondly how steep it was and thirdly how shockingly bad some drivers went past or in some cases almost through the riders!

Well done to all who've had a pop at this one!

If you got through that ok you'd probably like the Marmotte. 112 miles and you ride about a hundred miles over a Cat 1 and two Hors Categorie climbs before tackling L'Alpe d'Huez at the end as a sort of special treat.

Well done by the way.

I've done Ditchling Beacon using a 42 x 21 gear so you should be able to do it in 52 x 26 which is effectively the same thing but with a rubbish chain line. smile
