Looking at this on eBay, does anyone have any experience with the cheaper ones?

I bought one of these http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/W...

Not as cheap as your eBay one, but it's very good

Been using this 'cheap' one for the last 12 months. No complaints really.

the Edinburgh Bicycle one is the same as the Ribble one.

I have one and they are excellent.

I am in the market for a stand. How stable are these when doing heavy work like removing stiff BBs? Are they stable enough when clamped onto the seatpost?

Matt,

I am not sure I have ever seen a stand that is stable enough for a BB removal. That's always a bench job for me.

The stand is up to pretty much any other maintenance job though (indexing, brakes, lube/clean, headset work).

Cheers Raven.
I have never had a workstand so didn't know what to expect.

Matt, I've got that Edinburgh Bicycle stand and it's not stable enough for jobs like BB removal on all my bikes. Depends how tightly it's in I guess, but I usually drop the bike wheels to the floor (but still clamped in) for jobs like that.

I can't access the site from here, but Decathlon have a great stand for around £50. I bought one for a mate's birthday and it's more stable than mine, although the clamp head isn't as good. Still better overall even if it doesn't fold.

Thanks for the info a11y.
I need a folding stand as I just don't have the room. It sound like the Edinburgh one will be good enough general fettling.

The Edinburgh/Ribble one folds up small enough to fit in a wellie boot.
