I like Contential tyres and they do a decent combo pack here for £60 at wiggle.

Although Merlin has GP 4000 (not 4000s) individually at £25.

I'm going to be trying these when my current GP4000S wear out

Well done good prices at Ribble, erm how do you rate the 4000s and why are you changing, considering them myself when my Hardcases are a bit more worn as I'm no longer commuting on my road bike

I really like the GP4000S - they grip well, comfortable for their profile, are pretty tough and resistant to the hawthorn hedge cutting that goes on a lot round here. I just fancy a change and there are lots of recommendations for the Vittorias

Excuse the thread resurrection but I've just spotted these on Merlin:

Seems quite a bargain. Worth a punt for a commuting bike?

They will be quite weighty (rims alone are 550g) but should stand up to a lot of abuse, go for it

I bought aksiums too when my OE bontragers started to go square on the Trek. Nice wheels - very happy with them smile Quite cheap for the pair when I bought them too!

I'm guessing they're probably no heavier than the Alex S500's that my bike came with? Although there's so little left of the rear rim that maybe they are. hehe

The Mavic CXP-22's seem to have a reputation for being pretty much bombproof so maybe that's more what I need for commuting as I've hit some huge potholes recently. I feel I may get tempted and buy a 'proper' road bike this year when the weather brightens up.

The CXP 22s are better than the Alex rims, but quite weighty - a mate of mine has them as OE on his 2010 Spesh Allez Elite and the braking surface on the rear rim has started to disintegrate.

I did my first ride on the Aksiums today - really impressed - they accelerate like nothing I've ridden before £135 well spent at Merlin I'd say.

as i've always said, people get obsessed with groupsets when choosing a new bike when the far bigger gains are found through the wheels...

I chose the aksiums on the basis of their bearings - I wanted sealed units that required less care as one might on a commuting bike tongue out I was fed up of constantly taking apart and regreasing the rear hub smile

Wheels arrived this morning from Merlin, ordered them late yesterday afternoon.

The front potentially feels a bit lighter than my current set, rear maybe slightly heavier once the cassette is on. They look nice, nicer than you'd expect for £70. If they feel any heavier than what I have now then they're still quite a bargain for a set of winter wheels.

Hopefully my chain whip and lockring tool will arrive soon so I can get them on the bike.
