Bought one second-hand from Gumtree from a chap in Northern Ireland, couple of months old. Makes things easier and quicker for me.
1. I wouldn't be able to bring it back to Indonesia till my next visit (April or May if lucky)
2. We're always at our limit for luggage anyway, 15kg extra is 500 quid with Emirates!
3. A new one sent to Indonesia would incur monstrous tax

So a second hand one sent out here should be arriving back end of next week in time for me getting home from work!
Second-hand should not incur any penalties or taxes by customs, let's see what happens there.

The discounts are quite regular, but at the very least, I can guarantee there will be a biggish one at Easter, if you can wait that long. Remember you can also buy Halfords vouchers at 10% off face value,
Last I looked, the voucher site was looking a bit green around the gills... have you tried buying any in the past few months?

Not since July 2016, when i bought the bike. Though i seem to remember i had to find a slightly update link to their site to make it work.
(a link i have since lost - i will have a dig around for it)

Ah - they have got wise to it! Found on a money-saving forum:

"You can't buy the vouchers from the halfordsbusinessservices site now, you have to ring. Also the discount has been reduced to 7%.
I queried why the website was down and received this response:
Thank you for contacting Halfords Business Services and for your interest in our products

Halfords Gift Vouchers are being used all over the UK as rewards and incentives for staff, customers and sales teams. Halfords Gift Vouchers can be redeemed in any one of our 400 stores across the UK against any product.

We offer a discount for bulk purchase of our gift vouchers. If you are purchasing less then £20,000 per annum we offer a 7% discount on face value. If you are purchasing more than £20,000 per annum then we offer a 10% discount on face value.
One of our team will contact shortly to discuss your requirements further, but if in the meantime you would like to see our product range please click here"

So been out of mountain biking for a few years but now got a new rotational job so using it as a chance to get back in to it. Want to keep my trusty orange p7 at home so it's also a chance to buy a new bike. Was humming and hawing, googling etc. Went to have a look at the boardman fs team at Halfords. Seemed ok but then noticed they had their FS pro on sale at 1199. That's weird I thought. Hadn't checked the spec as it was beyond my budget at 1500. So went home and next day thought I would go to a branch that showed online that it had a medium in stock. Went to the branch to see it was 1500. Whats going on here then. Went straight round to first branch, yup still 1199. Hmmmm don't have time to go through with purchase. Did more googling last night and it seems this deal is too good to miss. Legged it from work at lunch and did the deal. Salesman told me it was a mistake but he had to honour the price. Deal done then with BC membership sorted last night and a Christmas voucher. All in all getting the bike for 1050. Well happy with that. Excited now to pick it up later this week fully built. Have asked them to fit stronger mech hanger for me as heard they are mince.

Roll on Saturday to knacker my legs and scare myself on the local trail!

Well, whatever it is that I've bought, it's currently on transit through Germany with DHL. If it turns up and it's a £20 snotter nicked from the back of the bike sheds I'll send the boys round to sort him out.
Turns out I have a mate who works out here with me who lives not far from the seller, if a knock on the door is needed...

Finnie they won't have those replacement hangers in stock it will take them a while to get one. You will probably have to tell them which one it is too (BETD 403)

Taking this right back to the question asked by the OP...

Last March (2016) I was entered into the 'Battle On The Beach' MTB race in South Wales. Silly really, seeing as how I didn't have a MTB of my own at the time.

The back-up plan was to borrow my son's GT Avalanche hard-tail. But this wasn't ideal as he had me down as a "bike killer" after several of my bikes had become worn out or completely broken as a result of either heavy use or accidents. I left it late to get a bike, and was mulling over various Trek hard tails, Orange hard tails, a Bird Zero, all around the £1,000 mark.

Then I spotted a 'last in the shop' Giant Anthem 3 at the same place I'd bought my road bike. It was marked up at £1099 down from £1499. A tidy saving as it was the very last size 'M' in the 2015 range and the shop wanted space to display the 2016 bikes. A crafty bit of googling revealed a shop up north with the exact same bike in stock, priced at £899. A cheeky price match request with a link was emailed to my (more) local shop, and after a bit of teeth grinding an agreement was made, through a grimace, to match that price.

I walked out of the shop VERY happy at having bought a lovely Giant Anthem 27.5" 3 for a whisker under 60% of it's rrp.

As an aside, I'd been trying to strike a deal on a 'reduced' Bird Zero. These were the pre-facelift (Mk 1) frames, and only a handful, built on frames that had paint flaws or cosmetic damage in transit. Component supply difficulties meant they had no wheelsets for them, but I'd sourced the exact same wheels on retail sale and wanted to do a deal based on a reduction to reflect this. Ben at Bird was very positive that some work-around could be agreed, either borrowing a demo set of wheels for the race, or buying my own. Sadly Dan and Dave were in on the day when I tried to order, and they were a lot less positive than Ben. They did, to their credit, get back to me with a solution, but it was literally hours too late as I'd already paid for and collected my Anthem.

In the near eleven months I've had the Anthem, I've done 2,750 miles on it. At sub-£900 for a full bouncer that's been quite heavily used in all weathers on quality local MTB trails and some enduro/XC races, to my mind it represents incredibly good value for the money!

Good luck to anyone looking for a new bike at the moment. It was about this time last year that I started looking for what eventually became my bargain Anthem!
