"Specialized today unveiled the jewel in their road bike crown – the McLaren Venge. The bike is the result of a nine-month collaboration with Formula One racing giants McLaren. It'll be used in competition for the first time at Milan-San Remo this weekend by a select group of riders from Specialized-sponsored teams, including Mark Cavendish (HTC-Columbia)."

"Prices will be decribed in more detail later on, but in the UK the McLaren Venge will cost £5,000 for the frame module. US prices for the S-Works Venge are $3800 for the frame module, $8800 for a SRAM Red build and $9200 for a Shimano Dura-Ace build. US prices for the McLaren Venge are yet to be confirmed."

The difference between the bikes is almost so small it doesn't matter. Put Matt Goss on any other bike in the peloton and I'm sure the resul would've been the same.

Great way to launch a new frame though... I expect the win has got a lot more sales in with people thinking it's the chassis (not the engine) that wins races.

$3800 -> £2336
+ 8% duty = £2523
+ 20% vat = £3027

Leaves about £2k for postage & packaging.

Ah, good spot!

"Claimed weight for the Venge frame is 950g, with the complete module (frame, fork, seatpost, crankset) tipping the scales at 2.07kg for the McLaren and 2.18kg for the S-Works....Claimed torsional stiffness to weight ratio between the head tube and rear dropouts is high too: 80.4 (Nm/deg)/kg for the S-Works Venge and 89.7 for the McLaren Venge"

Is this more of a Lotus Renault or a Renault Lotus?

Did McLaren design and manufacture the frame, or did they just put their livery on it?

I'm guessing they had half a day with a tech from McLaren and access to the wind tunnel or something.

That bike is not stiff enough its about 30% less stiff per weight than a regular road bike. Thats the trouble with all aero bikes. It is also heavier than the weight you have quoted being 2.3kg. It is also not breaking any ground technically speaking.
Buy it if you think it looks nice, but dont expect it to aid your riding as it will be heavier, less stiff and more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

By contrast Cervelo have been in MIT's (yes, that one in America) wind tunnel for years. As has several of the bigger bike manufacturers. AS I said elsewhere it's the arrogance of Mclaren that bugs me. The "we know CF and CFD so everyone else is an amateur" attitude.

So that's what happened to him. I always wondered when he'd be famous.

I wonder what his brother is doing these days...

They have a point to a degree? They are the pinnacle of aero design surely?

I would imagine Boeing and Airbus might have a thing to say about that? wink
