After getting a third puncture in three days I decided I had had enough of those fking st Maxxis Detonator tyres on my hybrid. I managed to get to an Evans Cycles on the air left in the rapidly deflating tyre on my commute home. There, I was utterly shafted the princely sum of £69.99 for a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. Still, at least there's far less chance of me getting a puncture now.
They are good, but you still need to be wary of pinchies / snakebites, and side wall punctures. That said, I've not had a puncture in 4 months, on the hybrid, since I put the marathons on.

Blimey bit pricey! Been using these in 32 width: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/vittoria-randonneur-ii-tyr...

Been great, done about 1000 miles, my commute is 8 miles of poor surface road then 2 miles of gravel rocky byway, they handle the offroad and road really well, with no "drag" on the tarmac. No punctures, but they were an arse to fit.

I even found a nail hanging out of them last friday!!!! It didnt get through the puncture proof layer and was just sticking out!

They are so cheap even if they get written off I can get another but they seem great at the moment

Gah, went to get one - £10 shirt, £5 shipping!
I've paid £9.99 at the Wimbledon branch & pick it up Weds/Thurs, i hate paying for postage & stuff
I've started to look at delivery in comparison to picking the item up myself. My car does 16mpg, more like 10mpg around town. Including parking, and then consider my time to do so, anything £5 or under for delivery seems like a good deal to me biggrin

I've not had a puncture in 3 and a half years commuting on my Panaracer Crosstowns. Half the price of the Schwalbes as well - at least they were at the time.

In fact, it was only at the weekend that the rear has finally worn enough for the pressure to cause a little bulge in the tyre.

I might try a Marathon as a replacement, see if they are worth the extra.

Not so much "bits" but a whole bike, it's a Model 2 straight bar tourer from Oxford Bike Works and will be my first bike for over 30 years. Looked around here in France but most bikes seem to be out and out mountain bikes or road racing bikes and at my age neither were for me so ended up trawling the net for a touring bike. Previous bike history in 1950's 60's and 70's was McLeans and Condor and back then I went everywhere on my bike and the latest Condor went with me to Botswana when I went to work there in the 1970's where it was used for 8 years. Hopefully the OBW Model 2 will be with me next week..

I'll let you know how it goes biggrin It's throwaway money so it's gotta be worth a go. Seems my skin can't cope with the cold any more and it's not buff weather yetfrown

I couldn't get on with the buffs. They're too tight around my neck and make me gag. I tried 4 different ones, giving them away to my wife and kids as soon as I realised they wouldn't stretch and that, apart from a kids' sized model, they were all the same.

Don't really like anything across my face, so that scare mask wouldn't be much good for me but I would like a lightweight buff that was suitable for a thicker neck.

I've got a Polar Buff and I get on with it OK, I can't wear roll necks etc. either. If you get the fleece part up to your chin it doesn't feel that tight across the adam's apple. I'd try one on if you get the chance.

The polar buff was the first I tried - I'm obviously a wimp.

I've just seen a "thin" balaclava which looks to have a wider neck. I'll order one and see how I fare.

Scarily I have the exact same Garmin and the exact same book - although i'm clearly winning as i'm a whole 25 pages into the book!!

I went for a run earlier - and my Garmin tells me i now need 72 hours rest........i think it may not be quite up to speed on IM training!!

You're definitely ahead of me - I haven't even had a chance to read the contents pages yet. I was hoping to absorb the information by osmosis wink

Decided that, although being a fat knacker in a luminous green top, luminous green shoes, I am not visible to any driver on the road, so have just had delivered a pair of One23 Atom micro lights. USB rechargeable, so no faffing with CR batteries. Nice alloy turned up devices. Damn bright, which my boss found out, when he switched it on.

A new stem after the bike fit, and some swissstop greens to replace the quite frankly rubbish Shimano pads.
