The Globe and Mail reports that recent tests in Specialized’s California wind tunnel may contradict earlier findings about the aerodynamics of shaved legs

The tests showed that shaving the test subject’s legs reduced drag by about seven percent, saving 15 watts at the same speed. In theory, that translates to a 79-second advantage over a 40-kilometer time trial.

The Specialized employees in charge of the wind tunnel, Mark Cote and Chris Yu, were so surprised that they tested five more cyclists before they would let one of their professional triathletes publicly reveal the findings. The results were consistent: All of them saved between 50 and 82 seconds over 40 kilometers.
So around 32 secs over 10 miles?

I was thinking more of my barnet. I have a generous and virile bouffant that is probably less than aero.

Are you going smooth for Wednesday? I favour the wookiee shorts, personally.

Yes. I got the call last week while I was descending Stelvio (on four wheels). Very nearly ignored the call but glad I didn't. I was all prepped for the solo 24 hour race at Brands Hatch on Sat/Sun (PH Sunday Service) but that wouldn't leave long enough to recover, so I've switched to the six hour race on Sunday instead. Still less than ideal but couldn't face pulling out entirely.

Don't give up too quickly. Your power may be a big advantage on a flat course, where weight isn't a factor. You don't know how crap I am behind the wheel either smile

Yup it's total bks/misunderstanding by those interpreting the figures, you might save 7% of the leg's drag not 7% of total drag. what proportion of total drag the legs constitute is up for debate, maybe 15% of frontal area (back of a beetroot gel maths) so cira 1% overall drag saving.
