Thought I would try Rosebikes tonight and ordered a hanger tool and a front xt mech for 10 speed, hoping it works better than the 9 speed one on one of my mtbs, as Merlins were out of stock today for the mech. Also after replacing a set of shimano cleats on a pair of Sidi mtb shoes that kept jumping out the pedal, then realising that the cleats on 2 other pairs of shoes are knacked as well, got 2 sets of cleats ordered the other day and fitted them before North Wales rides last week.

Bought a non-smart Elite trainer off a mate who has a more advanced version (the wife just rolled her eyes). Now I just need to work out how I will take this, the bikes, spares, clothes, golf clubs etc on a plane as I am relocating for a year.

Not so much bought, as they've been sat in the garage for the last 6 months or so...

...but I've fitted my brand new, unused Shimano M540 pedals. To my road bike. In deliberate disobedience of "The Rules". Because I only have MTB winter boots, for SPDs not SPD-SLs. And because I enjoy riding more when my feet remain warm for the duration. So, to hell with "The Rules", if warm feet require MTB pedals on a road bike, then so be it.

How come you went for those over the Northwave Artic zero boots? They are generally the default choice for people who wish to ride through the cold weather not resort to overshoes. I have had my pair for just over two weeks now and I've been very impressed. I bought mine second hand from Ebay and I suspect they will be a bit tight when I have to resort to thick winter socks. May have to put them back on the bay and buy a bigger pair frown

The Mavic boots do look much better than the Northwaves.

I ride hot but my feet get so cold. I was looking at the Northwave SPD boots but these look interesting and quite reasonably priced. I'd love to hear how you find them after a few rides.

The first set of winter boots I've seen that do not look totally horrific!

I generally get away with toe covers through winter, but I would entertain those if I got cold feet.

I gave in and bought a gabba the other day, mainly for the early season racing rather than training as such, but it seems alright so far, I already had the nanoflex arm warmers, the waterproof thing is impressive but I know it doesn't last long.

The Nanoflex/Gabba stuff is fantastic for high-tempo riding in the cold.

So is just about anything though given the heat you generate. Its more the fit I was interested in.

The value in most of that clothing is when you have to stop and rapidly start cooling.

I may well get a Gabba, short sleeved as I can get one for £100, I was thinking about the Stolen Goat version which got a better write up for the same price.

I find normal neoprene overshoes keep my feet toasty especially with thermal socks.

The Stolen Goat one is a Bioracer Tempest, same as the PH Tempest option in the last round of jerseys that Gruffy organised for us. Very well received it was too by all those who bought one (I had to move mine on for a fit issue only).

^That. I was itching to get a Gabba and got one of these in the PH order instead. Tested in the foulest conditions on TdPH Stage 2 and it was awesome. Great fit and in cold driving rain and wind I preferred it to a jersey + Rapha Race Cape. The Stolen Goat one is basically the same thing.

Spent £14 on a new pair of callipers for the 10 speed... Tbh after fitting them tonight I wasn't expecting too much as they felt like a cheap set of brakes but to be fair they work fairly well! Especially compared to the original 'Raleigh Foreign' brakes which were about as much use as dragging my trainers on the floor...

Shiney New Bike Bits, Mmm by Ben Magee, on Flickr

Also chucked a pair of toe clips on, purely because clipless pedals aren't allowed on the Eroica Britannia which I'll either enter or try to sell the bike to someone who want's to?*...

  • I fancy building a single speed / fixie and will use the proceeds to fund the new project, I like the 10 speed and all but having the Trek and the Dawes it kind of feels a bit surplus to requirements and it's a bit wasted on family pootling...

Bought this handsome thing last week. I'm 1 mile from work so seemed daft to drive. Loving it at the minute, it's a bit different to the MTBS I'm used to though.
