Hi Guys,

Just got my new bike arriving tomorrow after a while not cycling for a while, and I was thinking. Are there any decent iphone apps you guys use to measure how far you have gone/time taken etc?
Also any hints for a "new" cyclist

Cheers smile

I think sports tracker is now available for the iphone, I use it on my nokia, there are a few missing features they are working (total ascent/decent & live previous route comparison) but it is very good and has a good website.

I use Cyle meter and its fine for timing and avg speed but it is a little iffy with top speeds and altitudes IMHO.

MapMyRide seems pretty good offroad at least.

Yeah top speed is occasionally off on mine, the altitudes are also a bit out but I fix this by importing the GPX into ridewithgps and run the correction.

I don't like Cyclemeter, it doesn't poll the GPS chip frequently enough to be accurate (although you do get your speed to 2 decimal places when it does manage to get a fix), but MotionX is superb.

Not sure if you are on the road or on a mtb. For off roading, MotionX uses OpenCycle maps and these are better than anything I have seen elsewhere, Garmin included.

I have the paid for MotionX but the free one is good too. You can upload routes to it, to follow and it has voice coaching.

There are now loads of free ones in the App store and most are acceptable performance.

Elevation on GPS is a bit ropey, I think you are best to import into something like SportTracks and run a correction from SRTM data etc

iMapMyRide does, although I'm not sure on the accuracy. Looks good when you view your routes later on a PC though.

Anything that doesn't eat the phone battery? Went out this morning, set the mapmyride going, come home four and a bit hours later and the phone's off as the battery's run out. It was definitely at 100% when I set off, and the phone's only two or three months old too.

The GPS chip is very power hungry. The more the app polls the chip, the more accurate and useful the app is.

If the app doesn't use much battery, it isn't normally accurate enough to be taken seriously.

It's all a trade off and you need to decide what you need, but an external battery and docking lead lets you use the best gps apps all day.

I use imapymyride, its great for a free app.

I use that, and Trails and together I have a sat nav, and two very good course recorders.
