help - where can I hire timing equipment

does anyone know who or where I can hire timing equipment for a race the runway event in Scotland later this year

Is good advice I'd say. It's not an easy piece of kit to operate without prodigious experience and know-how.

Thanks for the advice. I will try tomorrow. We would prefer to hire the kit plus operator if possible. The the event will be a high profile occasion and requires professional help.

Lee Child LA Racing, I think the Isle of Lewis motor club have on, i think Pod had a portable tree. or try Portatree uk rep think he is in the midlands

You can try Straightliners, they do a lot of runway based events or we've got a portable TSI system at SPR but I don't know how available it is.

As far as I am aware any event that is timed has to have a permit (MSA)

In light of the events on last years Jim Clark Rally, I would very strongly suggest you get professional help in organising your event.

Look at the MSA website for timekeepers, etc.

All the public race days at SPR and SCR aren't MSA permitted and they're timed but the appropriate insurances are in place. None of the events at York are MSA, they run under a different body, might be worth asking some questions to Steve Murty about how they do things.

True, but they do run to a permit (Hence why the MSA bit was in brackets) It is the timing of am event that changes things. That is why track days are not timed at any venue. Yes I know people still do it by various means, but it is not done officially

Trevor Duckworth at Straightliners or Lee Child will no doubt be able to help you out with at least the right information. I would suspect though that both of the above would only want to be involved with fully authorised events.

As far as I'm aware Straightliners, Dakota Raceway as well as many others including York Raceway run under IOPD permit.

Managed to speak to Trevor at straight liners. Really helpful and full of advice, I will speak to him again next week.
A bit more info about the event

We are organising a charity event on behalf of The St Andrews Hospice in Lanarkshire. Loosely titled race the runway at the moment.

Prestwick Airport are allowing us exclusive access to the 2 nd runway for the day on 10th May. The few fastest cars will be allowed a run on the main runway late that afternoon. (Previously only ever allowed the Gumball rally for a few moments last year)

Probably the premier car group Parks of Hamilton have agreed to be the major sponsor of the event, their stable of dealerships include Bentley, BMW, Maserati and most recently McLaren.

Essentially it will be a fun run, allowing owners to hopefully max out their cars in a controlled and safe environment. All in the cause of charity.

Hence we need the assistance of some professional help, because it is a charity event on private ground the need for permits is not required as the timings or speed measurements are for fun and the record on the day.

Gary, being for charity and being on private land makes no difference. it WILL need a permit. It is YOUR interest to get this done right. The law will be no less lenient on you because it is charity event, if things go wrong.

From the IOPD website "The Road Traffic Act can be used to prosecute organisers, promoters and drivers involved in any event with motorised vehicles, anywhere the public is admitted, if it is perceived that there is 'driving in other than a road like manner', i.e. contra to that prescribed in the highway code.

Cheers drumroll. We will look into the specifics further. As I said early days, though maybe not that early. We do want to get it 100% right in order that we can make it an annual event. Airport, local council and private organisations all need to be consulted

Thanks for the comments and advice. Trevor from straight liners has agreed to come on board and help out. Sounds a real gentleman and I'm sure he will keep us right.

The event is a goer for the 10th may. McLaren have agreed to sponsor the event courtesy of Parks of Hamilton. Already have an array of exotics have signed up.
