Fia Main event this weekend
Discussion
Just wondered if many folks off here will be going. Should be decent weather (for a change ). I think it's the 50th anniversary event which includes full racing and the Red Arrows full show on Sunday- looking forward to that as I've not seen them for years and ,as I remember, it was pretty spectacular.
Not going as busy, but following RV3's progress. 1.08s 60ft time yesterday on only its second run since finishing being built this week. Come on Andy, you can get the 5s run

I attended on Saturday, and whilst I'd been to Santa Pod in the past for RWYB events this was the first competitive drag racing event I'd gone to.
I went with some friends who go every year and kept on saying what a good event it was.
I was really impressed. A huge variety of competitors, none of which were boring (every circuit racing event has at least one race you're not interested in) and the Top Fuel cars were pure violence!
Other than the 2hr break at lunch due to the crash it was constant action which is a lot better than circuit racing that's all stop/start, so you get good value for the seemingly pricey £40 entry fee.
Recommended.

Roger's crash looked horrible, we were sat at the top end and I managed to snap these before the car went right

Testament to how well built the cars are. Great weather, great times - must invest in a tent to stay

We went on Sunday and had a great day. Glad we got in early though as some folk were queueing for two hours to get in apparently
Yes. That was a bit strange, as I was able to drive straight in on Saturday and Monday, but on Sunday I had to queue for two hours to get in and consequently missed the Q3 pro session. Listening to it on the radio was the best I could do.It was my first Main Event and I really enjoyed it, I entered Street Eliminator in my golf and had loads of fun racing some really impressive cars, I managed a PB on street tyres (11.67 @134) and a pb on MPH on another run of 136mph and was knocked out by Stu Williams in his Supra in the Quarter Finals https://youtu.be/tDgVJbllqMk
It was a lot of fun and would like to do it again next year.... perhaps with a bit more traction

Regarding Roger´s accident : Am I right in thinking that Micke was shut down remotely to prevent a two-car crash ?
I (sort of) know that the emergency remote shutoff is automatically activated
once a car passes the antennas in the shutdown and the Driver has not shut down all Systems.
Who would have the reote control, crew chief or race control ?
There were red traffic lights on the SPR guardrails at ~1000ft years ago,
I was told that they could be activated by the crew chief if he saw his racer in trouble,
and the driver himself did not realize it, is that right ?

From my view from the tower Micke had already lifted, I don't think it was a reaction to what was happening to Roger, and as far as I am aware the auto shutoff activates after the finish line, there is no remote control.
We used to have lights on the wall (I think they were around the 1/8th) that could be activated by the crew chief in certain circumstances, but were not in place for long.

The Electrimotion shutoff will trigger if the car passes a given point on the track and hasn't already been shut off by the driver by that point. I don't know where the transmitters are installed at Santa Pod, but if they are positioned according to Electrimotion guidelines, they won't trigger until around 400' beyond the finish line[1]. Since Roger's accident happened before that, I don't think the automatic shutoff would have come into play, and I think it was just that Micke was already off the throttle. In theory it would be possible to give the crew chief a means of remotely operating the shutoff in the circumstances you describe. In practice I'm not aware of anyone in Europe that does that.
[1] I wonder if they have two sets of transmitters, one for 1000' racing and one for 1320'? That would make sense, and certainly I've had mine trigger earlier than 1720' from the start line.
