Hello from germany to @ll pistonheads !
My fave "real" piece of drag history is a conrod of the first european 6 sec. Pro Stock engine,
given to me from Michael Malmgren´s Crew Chief Magnus Cato
after a long night talking in the Hockenheim pits.....8-)
My most unforgettable memory is
the 6.24 run that Harlan Thompson did (off the trailer!)
with the Budweiser Fuel F/C at the USAF Fliegerhorst in Erlensee,
in 1979 (?) it was a european best I think, no official record
because the strip there was only used part-time, and not backed up.
On 2 wheels, my fave memory was the loudest bike in the pits,
the unreal 500cc single of dutchman Jan Honee running low 8s ,
on fuel with >50 psi blower boost,
in the early 90s, after 16 years of working on it.
Greetz,
Benni
Thanks for this forum, this is my first post,
is there any place for new guests to introduce themselves ?

Most people seem to be introducing themselves in the 'Racer or Spectator' thread: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=177&t=307045

Not a crisp packet, more like a piece of cardboard and no guard beam.

I'll never forget my first commentary at Shakespeare County Raceway working alongside 'the guv'nor' John Price, that was an ambition realised. My other personal favourite memory is stepping out onto the Santa Pod startline for the first time ever, when I was crewing for Paul Croston's 'B' Sting Topolino at the Sportsman Nationals 2002, that was special. I'd always wanted to do it, and it was only betterd later that day when I did it again in the pitch dark with people still in the grandstand.. I'll take that memory to my grave !

Yup, I was there, and quite possibly the finest run I have ever seen in any class. Such a shame he had to retire because of his injuries from that run, he could have truly been one of the greats

For me it has to be two events, first summer of 74 watching Stardust and Houndog racing each order, then the Blue Max and the Snowman racing each other.

Hi there !
I was there , too, but was taking pix at the start and really didn´t see what was going on,
until I saw this photo by a UK lensman who stood near the finish :
(hope the link functions)
www.usa-autodele.dk/filarkiv/Kim%20Raymond%202.jpg
The run was an absolute stormer, but at halftrack the front wing broke in half,
with only the right half still providing downforce (dragging on the asphalt),
the left half turning upward and pulling the left front wheel up 10in. at the stripe.
Add to that the almost collapsing wing, and wing struts, the bend in the frame,
the distorted tires still blackstriping at the finish,
and you have a hell of a ride !
(The 4,64 is the fastest ANYone has ever done with a two-element rear wing,
and Kim was awfully lucky that the right half of the front wing didn´t turn upward too,
otherwise he would have taken off,
and probably landed in the marketplace of Rushden or so...8-0 )
When Kim was asked afterwards wether he realized that the front wing broke,
and why he did not abort the run and decided to stay "on it",
he gave the answer that only a true racer can give :
"Because I had to!"
Best run (and best pic) of the last ten years, I think.
Benni
P.S.: How do I insert other smilies than those provided on top of the "reply" ??

Benni, for smileys, once you have clicked to reply, look to the left of the reply box, there is a "smiles legend".

All the smileys you could need.Nearly.thumbup

How about a rather humorous memory, at least for the spectators. I'm talking about the year 1989/1990? when three cars came to the line for the Cannonball final, Harlan Thompson, John Spuffard and Rune Fjield if I remember correctly. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in Race Control while they sorted that one out. I'm sure one of our resident "memory banks" will correct the details if I've got them wrong.

Reminds me of one of the Cannonballs, IIRC, Harlan was under the gangtry , starter plugged in, and Rune was being towed up the fire up, with the crew still putting the plugs back into the motor.

Cant remember the outcome of the race tho.

Well it isn't the 1990 Cannonball as i have the August/september issue of DRN infront of me. Kagered won that event!

It was 1989, and from reading this issue it was Gary Page in the hotseat. Harlan indeed was 1st alternate and won...but did not. Rune smoked the tyres and Harlan went 6.22 with the crowd booing! Reading on it also states "If Page could get up the track, he'd be the winner. After a couple of tries they couldn't get it started, and by that time the right parts arrived a no run curfew was imposed and that disappointingly, was that. Who was the winner? No one knows"

So then...who won? ;P

Thats right, It started a bit of crowd needle with Harlan vs Gary,I remember being at the next meeting, and they paired up for a qualifier, the crowd was all excited, and I think Gary beat him.

Looking at the next issue i can't see what happenes next! No mention. However random piece of info for you, the headline for October 1989 is "Geof Hauser captures the first pro mod seven!"

Now there's a milestone!

And then wrote it off at Avon Park from memory........Sylvia started driving the Sierra, but I belive it was a bit lively at the top end and Geoff took over.

Excellent looking car.Set the way forward for a lot of people in terms of style I reckon.

Sylvia crashed the first Sierra, the pink "Independant Express" Super Gas car at Santa Pod. Sylvia was actually quite fortunate to get out of that accident unscathed, and she retired from the hot seat to devote her full attention to the intensive breeding program which gave us some of our most talented Junior Drag Racers! The White Sierra worked its way up to full pro-mod spec, and it was this car which ran the 7, and then crashed heavily at Avon Park as mentioned above.

apart from spectacular moments, my favourite pieces of history are a piston from Kent Persson's first 4 in Peter Lantz's car (first 4 in Europe) and part of Fast Freddy's Por Mod pickup door cool
