Craggers - be interested to know your signs - I've noticed that the signs for things are different in different regions. My southern-signing friend was very confused by the northern sign for 'biscuit'.

Hairydave has the first step correct.
Clue: the second step is miming a burnout.

Personally I couldn't ever see a competition arising from trying to find what something is in sign writing. Now i've seen everything. bowtie

I'd much rather have Tanya just tell me personally

Mine is Derbyshire's which is similar to Sheffield's (there is some sign a bit different i.e number counting)

I'm learning british sign language, and we are studying 'transport' at the moment.

I was surprised to see that there is a sign for drag racing, as quite a lot of non-mainstream things don't have signs and just get spelled. Anyway, nothing could have prepared me for the sight of three deaf helpers signing it in unison!

Before I explain it, anyone guess how you'd sign 'drag racing'? You're allowed 5 movements maximum.

p.s. 'real ale' is two moves - pretend you're pulling a hand pump, then drinking a pint. Easy!

......and the answer is?

Ok, bear with me as photos would help but I think I've packed my camera.

1. Make driving motions with hands on mock steering wheel.
2. Flap both hands (one either side) as if waving burnout smoke away.
3. Push right hand forwards whilst holding left hand clenched on left side.
4. Wave right pointy finger in a poor imitation of a tachometer.
5. Make the BSL sign for exit/way out (left hand flat, palm down in front of you, right hand points and zooms under left hand away from you).

Where's a webcam and Youtube when you need it?

Thanks for the Info,
and I would like to see how readers of this thread were miming around
in front of their screens..........like me........
OK, now we know how we can tell others how we lost our hearing..............paperbag

Now that is cleared, I have another question about the more "traditional" sign language
that is used in the burnout/startline area of a dragstrip :
The signs to "burn out", "move forward", "stop vehicle", "stop engine" etc etc.
seem to be universal all over the (dragracing) world.
Is it true that they originated in the signals that airport/carrier personnel
gave to the pilots of airplanes in that noisy environment ?
I especially like the "shut engine off" sign,
with the the "killing" motion of horizontal flat hand waving across throat.

And what are the special and unforgettable signs I forgot, you remember,
or you have used/been given ?
