My wife bought an FN2 CTR a few months ago. She's really happy with it; it's an '07 car that's done 45k (the previous owner walked to work), it has a full Honda service history and the previous owner was an obsessive car geek like me who changed the oil halfway between services and as far as we can tell treated the car really well - his walls were full of Honda pics etc. Lately though my wife's been mentioning that the red oil light has been flashing on and off sporadically. She says the red light indicates oil pressure, so I'm guessing it's either a sensor or an issue with the oil pump. The oil level is exactly halfway between min and max on the dipstick - I've been checking it every week or so because it's a new car and we wanted to know whether it was using oil (it uses none at all). My wife took the car down to our local Honda dealer on Thursday, assuming they'd check the pressure on the running engine and perhaps swap the sensor to see if it cured the issue, but they just said it needed a service and charged her for an oil and filter change! Naturally, that's done nothing at all and the problem's still there.

Any ideas? Does anyone know if this is a known issue or have any advice? I'm wondering whether I should fine another nearby Honda dealer and discuss the issue with them or take the car in myself.

The K20 is really sensitive to oil level and I've always been advised to make sure it as at the maximum marker. Try that and see if that solves the problem.

Thank you, I think you're right: I've just been out and checked the oil and, as is usual for a main dealer, they've over-filled the oil by about 0.5-1cm on the dipstick; I asked my wife about the red light and she says that it hasn't re-appeared.

Finding out about over filled oil is much easier on Google :-) It shouldn't matter too much apparently, but I'll drain a bit out next time we get a dry day.

Keep an eye on it. Oil light on a k20 isn't usually a good sign, when you see the light it's usually too late, hopefully it's nothing serious. Overfilling won't do any damage. Min to max line on a k20 is exactly 1 litre.

Perhaps a bit of needless scaremongering there, if OP had pulled the dipstick and found it was nearly run dry of oil then it would be time to wonder about what damage has been done. I think he'll probably be ok.

It's not scaremongering unfortunately, I've heard this numerous times.

If that's the case then Honda need to make some changes. All we, and the previous owner, were doing was following Honda's advice to keep the oil between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick. We had the oil exactly halfway between the two, so obviously don't expect any trouble. We're well aware of Honda's VTEC oil sensitivity, which is why we were being so careful to keep the oil exactly where the manual recommends! I naturally assumed that if the oil was there and a light was flashing, then either the oil pump had issues or the sensor was broken, thus the post on this thread - I'd like to diagnose those things ASAP.

I'm sure it'll be fine, just make sure the engine oil is always at or just above the max marker. Honda telling you it should be inbetween the min/max indicators isn't ideal. Keep it topped up with 5w-40. If you were on or below the minimum marker, I'd be more concerned.

yes We will do that now, yes. Not much of a min/max system on the dipstick is it? biggrin
