2006 was when "the drive by wire " came out and there where other modifications as well including changes to the inlet system making induction kits different for pre / post drive by wire .

K&N list the same kit pre and post 2006. Any more thought?

The K&N kit is the same for DBW cars, but you do have to drill the intake pipe to allow for a sensor that that the pre-DBW cars don't have. The K&N intake is plastic and easy to drill. Not sure what the AEM intake pipe is made from, but if it's metal they probably couldn't be bothered offering two different versions.
