I will stick with the short version of the story, in the past two weeks i have noticed a whiney/wurring noise from the drive train on my car. It increases in volume as you go faster, doesnt go away when you dip the clutch, brake or load up any of the corners.

Today i took the car to TGM, Tom had it up on the ramps and run the car whilst in the air. It was pretty obvious it was coming from the back of the gearbox (near the prop, turret area).

He suggested simply buying a second hand box and swapping it over, i wanted to cover all the options as obviously a second hand box is an unknown quantity.

Has anyone had any experience with having their S2000 gearbox rebuilt or can recommend anywhere in the Oxfordshire / south east who could help?

Cheers!

There have been a few people who have either re built or had boxes rebuilt on S2ki , including Squeak .

But as Tom said the usual process is to get a 2nd hand one , although personally I would have a go at rebuilding one my self if and when mine dies.

Just had a read of squeaks thread, the garage who did her gearbox isn't too far from me, will give them a try. Thanks!

If I had the time and the space I would consider looking at it myself. It's my daily so makes things a bit more tricky.

I'm still searching for a decent price / low mileage / correct MY box but they are hard to come by. Do you know if they are the same throughout the production? I know in the US the AP1/AP2 were different internally.

I have a sneaky suspicion you can fit any of the boxes to any car , but that a hunch so do take my word for,it

The syncro,s changed and I believe the bell housing was beefed up , later clutches were 055 but often still buzz on over run.

Carbon tipped synchros on 04 onwards boxes, so those are the ones to go for.

I had the same problem as you, changed the box, 15K miles later it was starting to make the same noise again.

I still have an AP1 gearbox that needs a rebuild which I could sell you really cheap so you can then swap them if you like, rather than having to be without a car as yours is rebuilt?

I had the same problem in my S. After long research, thinking it could be the gearbox, the diff, even wheel bearing - the real problem was the bearings in the secondary shaft. After I changed them the noise was gone. There was a lot of wear on them. The best is that you don't have to drop the whole gearbox out of the car. Also if you want you can take the opportunity and replace the final gear at this stage.
