Hey all!

Im new to this forum! I also have a question. I am interested in buying a 1994 3 door o 2000 coupe Civic 1.6 VTI. Can anyone clarify few things for me? How much mpg will I get, I know that owning this car is about more then economy but I don't want it to break the bank. At what intervals does the car need servicing? its not too expencive to own and run is it? I really would like to own one! Thanks!

Hi, I used to own the slightly later EK4 version made from around 1995. Same engine iirc. I never took the trouble to work out mpg particularly accurately, but I think mid 20s to 30ish is about right. You won't get great economy, even on the motorway, due to the low gearing. I think the service interval on mine was every 12 months / 9000 miles or so.

It was the most reliable car, probably the best car in some ways, that I've ever owned. It never went wrong, just needed routine maintenance. My local honda dealer used to service it for about £150. I ended up keeping mine for something like 8 years.

I think the biggest issue with these cars now is likely to be bodywork (mine was starting to rust fairly aggressively in places (check rear arches carefully) and perishable consumables (suspension bushes etc).

Any other questions, just ask.

I assume you mean a 2000 Coupe VTI. They didn't make a coupe VTI in the earlier EG shape.

They will realistically get mid 30's MPG, if you drive the tits off you'll get less.

servicing is your prerogative, yearly is worthwhile to keep it running sweet.

Keep an eye on oil levels as the engine may burn a small amount.

Hey guys!

Thanks for the replies! I was thinking that I should get one, they seem a little on the pricey side! One in good condition for as near as makes no differenc 5K! I have a fondness for older jap cars! I have driven a Micra since 16 years old! I know lol. I tool ownership of it 2 months ago and its NEVER let us down! Never, I can only begin to imagine how much more reliable a Honda would be! mid 20s for the mpg is what I was expecting from the Civic, however its always best to ask an owner or ex owner eh! The ones on auto trader are pricey but are they worth it? hmmmmm......I will have to think about it but I rreeeeeeeaaaaaly want one! Thanks guys!

£5k? ouch! You must really like your older chap stuff as you say. Out of interest, why aren't you considering an EP3 type R for that sort of money?

I had a 1994 Civic SIR import. it was a beast of a car. I loved the low slung shape. mine was only 20000 mile on and was pretty expensive because it wasn't that old. It looked standard but had a few HKS boxes\ filters under the bonnet. Rolled it after just 4 months! gutted.
Also had Civic Jordan no1, which was not anywhere near as good and later a black Civic EK9. mint and original. I sold it after 2 months as found it hard work.
Bought a Fabia VRS new in 2005, remapped it. fantastic performance in the real world. mid range umph was fantastic. I am talking type r performance just about, without the handling.
Both very different cars.
I am a fan of Preludes. go for a late UK red top manual if you can find one. They feel better built and more grown up than the Civic.
For 5 grand if you want performance I would be in a Impreza WRX 05 plate. If you really want a Honda as said earlier go Type R at that money.

The 1994 VTi you refer to is known as the EG6, which came to the UK as the VTi and in Japan it was known as the SiR.

I've had a 1994 EG6 for a year now and it's an awesome car, really good fun to drive, pretty quick (about the same as an EP3 Type-R) looks great (IMHO) and has that early 90s hot hatch retro feel. It gets a consistent 25ish MPG but spends a lot of time in VTEC. Consumables are cheap and easy to get hold of, aftermarket wise it's one of the most well supported cars on the planet! Lightened flywheel made an impressive difference.

If bought in good order it will be very easy to keep it that way and upkeep costs will be low, however if it needs significant work parts can be quite expensive from Honda.

Mechanically and electrically Civics are quite sound, some age related wear notwithstanding. Rust is an issue but no more than any other 90s era Japanese cars.

Be discerning when you buy, pick the right one and ownership will be very easy

As regards mpg, my old 94 vti hatch managed 35-39 mpg on the motorway at 70mph. Around town it was 20s, id say a combined of low 30s.
